Reinhard has done a masterful job of writing up a fantastic archaeological find for the layman who is without formal anthropological education. The mountaineering aspect of both Reinhard and friends and the Inca 500 years ago is beyond ordinary. The politics of trying to do a scientific adventure in a third world country is described very well. I recently (Nov '08) did similar work; volunteer conservation trail work, teaching mountain rescue to local rangers/police, ruin and trail stabilization, etc. in Peru and can fully appreciate his descriptions of the surroundings. I recommend this book for anyone planning a trip to the Arequipa and Cuzco areas.

Prior to seeing Juanita in her museum in Arequipa I had no idea she existed. I became fascinated by her and wanted to learn more. This book took me through johan's discovery of her but also her preservation and the research done and knowledge acquired through it. I had no idea how much more I could learn when the llullaillaco mummies were discovered in Argentina and are even more preserved than Juanita. I can't wait to learn more about these incredible discoveries and more discoveries to come and what they can teach us in the future.

Just bought it to read on airplane ride and it's fascinating stuff. Surprising, current, was completely unaware of the Incan sacrifices. Glad I bought it.

I read Ice Maiden before a trip to Peru. This book gives much information-not only about the actual ice maiden herself, but related discoveries including the difficulties, both physical and political, of such types of archaeology. It is also readable and provides sources, references. Intriguing and moving at times, it inspired me to read more. Wish there were more pictures and maps. Certainly worthy.

love archaeology, especially south American? you'll love this

Very exacting and to the point. If you love Nazca or Peru, you will love this book. Reinhard writes from the viewpoint of an academic, but phrases his views in easy to understand prose.

The title of this book is a little misleading, but the fact that most of the book is about experiences other than the ice maiden does not detract in any way. The writer does a great job and the subject is gripping. Wonderful.

I was expecting something a little more exciting with more about the actual discovery of Juanita rather than further exploits. But interesting nevertheless.

Who Was Nikola Tesla?   Nikola Tesla was seven years old on the day the people of Gospić, in what is now modern-day Croatia, received a brand-new fire pump. The town had organized a fire department for the very first time. The firefighters trained hard to learn to work together. But it was the fire pump that everyone wanted to see. It was a really big deal. The pump let firefighters move water from the local river and direct it onto flames, in order to put out fires quickly.   The leaders of the town organized a celebration to show off the fire pump. Everyone in Gospić (say: GAH-spich) put on their best Sunday clothes. They gathered around when the machine was brought down to the river. There was a ceremony, and several people gave speeches. Then came the big moment: a demonstration to show how the pump could spray water.   The new machine was painted black and red. It needed sixteen men to work it. They took their positions, turned on the hose, and . . . nothing! No water came out. The pump didn’t work!   None of the grown-ups was sure what to do. But young Nikola (say: NEEK-oh-la) had an idea. “I know what to do, mister,” he told one of the men in charge. “You keep pumping.” Nikola jumped into the water and felt for the hose. There was no pressure. He tried to picture the reason in his mind. He thought something might be blocking it.   Quickly, Nikola found the problem. The hose had bent sharply in one spot and stopped the pressure from pushing the water out. He straightened out the line, and water surged through the hose! The crowd cheered. Many of the people got wet! But they didn’t mind. Nikola was a hero. They carried him on their shoulders.    Before Nikola jumped into the river that day in the early 1860s, he didn’t know anything about fire pumps or water pressure. He just knew there was some reason the machine was not working properly—and he knew he could figure out a way to fix it.   Nikola never lost his gift for figuring things out. He grew up to be one of the most important inventors in the history of the world! He helped create the technology that led to radios and remote-control devices. He imagined cell phones and the Internet many years before anyone heard of such things. He created a motor that helped power machines around the world. And he is most famous for helping to bring electricity into homes everywhere.   Nikola had a talent for picturing a problem in his mind and figuring out a way to fix it. Luckily for us, he loved to develop new and better ways of making things work.     Chapter 1: Learning Experiences     Young Nikola Tesla was a very smart boy who one day did something not very smart: He tried to fly. He went out to the barn at his family’s farm carrying an umbrella. He climbed to the roof of the barn, opened the umbrella, and jumped off. Not surprisingly, Nikola fell directly to the ground with a thud. Fortunately, he didn’t break any bones. He spent several weeks recovering from the fall. Then he was as good as new.   Nikola wasn’t even six years old at the time. There was no such thing as an airplane then. He didn’t know about gravity or lift or the forces that allow things to fly. He didn’t know it was not possible to fly simply by holding an umbrella in the air! The only thing Nikola knew was that he could picture himself floating through the air with his umbrella. And if he could picture something in his mind, he believed he could make it work.   The Tesla family farm where Nikola tried to fly that day was in a village known as Smiljan. That’s where Nikola had been born in 1856. Smiljan is in what is now known as the country of Croatia. But Nikola’s family was Serbian. Serbia is a neighboring country.   Nikola’s father was Milutin (say: mil-YOU-tin), the priest in the local Serbian Orthodox Church. Orthodox priests can be married and have children. Milutin wanted Nikola to be a priest just like he was. Nikola’s mother was named Djouka (say: DYOH-kah). She ran the family farm and had never gone to school. Djouka had never even learned to read or write. Her mother had become blind when Djouka was still a young girl and—as the eldest daughter in the family—she took over running the household. There had been no time for school.    But Djouka was a very intelligent woman who had an incredible memory. Word for word, she could remember stories from the Bible and poems she had heard. Her husband was an educated man who wrote poetry, owned many books, and spoke German and Italian in addition to his native Serbian-Croatian language. Milutin probably recited many of his books to her.   Djouka worked tirelessly from dawn until dark around the farm. She often used tools that she invented herself, such as a mechanical eggbeater. “I must trace to my mother’s influence whatever inventiveness I possess,” Nikola once wrote.   Nikola had two older sisters, Milka and Angelina, and one younger sister, Marica. He also had a brother, Dane, who was seven years older. Tragically, he was killed in an accident involving the family horse when he was only twelve years old. Like Nikola, Dane had been very smart.   Nikola’s birthday was July 10. Most accounts say he was born just as the clock struck midnight, turning July 9 into July 10. Outside, a thunderstorm flashed lightning in the sky.   The flare of lightning at his birth was appropriate, because electricity soon fascinated Nikola. When he was three years old, he loved to play with Macak, the family cat. One cold, dry day while he stroked Macak’s fur, he saw little sparks. Nikola was amazed! He didn’t understand what the sparks were at the time, but he knew he wanted to find out. “It’s electricity,” his father explained. “The same thing you see through trees in a storm.”   Nikola followed his mother’s example by experimenting and coming up with his own ideas. When he was four, he developed his first “invention.” One day, the other boys in the village went fishing, but they didn’t take Nikola with them. Determined not to miss out on all the fun, Nikola made his own fishing line with a hook on the end of a string. He didn’t have bait to tempt the fish. His homemade line didn’t work. But while Nikola was trying to figure out what went wrong, a frog leaped at the hook. Nikola grabbed him. It turned out that his fishing line was really a frog-catcher! He returned to the farm with nearly two dozen frogs that day. All the boys in the neighborhood liked to play with frogs. His friends hadn’t caught a single fish! But they were happy to learn Nikola’s secret for catching frogs.   When he was five, Nikola began going to school in the village. He studied math, religion, and German. Outside the classroom, he was always learning, too. Once, when Nikola was playing down by a stream in the village, he noticed a small slice of a tree trunk shaped like a circle. Nikola cut a hole through the center of the wood. He found a tree branch and pushed that through the hole. Then he rested the ends of the branch on the opposite banks of the stream. The slice of the tree trunk was partly in the water. The wheel began to spin! The force of the water made the wheel turn round and round. Nikola had taken energy from nature (the stream) and generated enough power to spin the wheel around!

Great book! My 2nd grader is doing a project on Tesla, and he really enjoyed this book. He went to bed willingly each night, because he was so excited about his evening reading time. He finished reading it in three nights. I highly recommend this book; even though it’s geared for a younger audience, it would be great for younger or older kids...I even read and enjoyed it!

#159,279 Paid in Kindle Store (See Top 100 Paid in Kindle Store)

I did not keep this book. I ordered three different books to help me with treatment of chronic and severe insomnia. This book is a more general in describing the different types of insomnia and not so helpful with ideas for treating the problem. It would be a good book if you are just starting to figure out what your problem is, but I was beyond that point and needed more help with treatment ideas.

I’ve been plagued by insomnia all my life, so I have read dozens of improve-your-sleep books. This is the best by a long shot!! Most assume anxiety to be the sole cause, so only address that. This one does not take a one-size-fits-all approach but gives a map of things to try, many ideas I’ve never encountered. LOVE IT!!

This book was certainly thorough, but for long-time insomniacs who have tried everything and researched on the web, I don't think it was worth reading. I didn't learn anything. That doesn't mean that it's not rife with information. If you just developed a sleep problem, or you haven't spent hours or years reading about various ways to resolve this dilemma, this book may be very useful for you. But if you have already been there, done that, manufactured the T-shirt, don't bother.

Recommended by Mayo Clinic doctor (colleague of author). Ultimately, you answer some questions in the book that determine if you are anxious or depressed, then it advises you to see another doctor for pills. Not impressed.

I purchased this book because my new sleep clinic doctor recommended that I read it before our second appointment (it was actually on a checklist that they give out to all new patients). This book would be a good starter book for someone who is just starting out with sleep problems. Having been seen at a few other sleep clinics in the past and having past my experiences of dealing with my chronic sleep issues, I feel as though this book was not good for me. All of the information presented were things that I had already done or learned about in the past. I found nothing new or helpful, and if anything, it was all more of a review along with skimming through things that did not apply to me at all.The good thing about this book is that many of the things I had learned about in the past, tried, or that I am currently doing were in this book. Overall, I'd say that this is a good starter book from someone new to sleep issues, but keep in mind that it doesn't really explore things in depth very much and to me felt pretty basic.

This book seems to be the gold standard for non-medical people like me with sleep disorders. I don't believe anything new has been written that's as informative as this book. It was recommended by my sleep disorders physician and my sleep disorders psychologist. I found it very helpful and I have referred back to it several times for support.

Deep restorative sleep grows increasingly difficult to achieve as we age. (I'm 69.) I found this terrifically helpful and insightful. The author is a genuine expert with broad and long experience, and he acknowledges the individuality--no one solution helps everyone. But his advice has been a great help to me, especially by eliminating naps, exercising in the afternoon, going to bed a bit later and getting up a bit earlier--spending fewer hours in bed. But everyone is different. He also explains the ineffectiveness and hazards of pills and alcohol.

I praised Peter's book in a previous review and note that 25/31 reviewers share my high opinion of it. No book can please everyone, but the book/workbook combination may come closer. If you really want to go into the details of your insomnia, the workbook offers a tested device to time your sleep onset. Research suggests people aren't accurate in estimating that from their experience. For example, a widely known and respected psychoanalyst slept in our lab and said, "You see! I didn't sleep at all." The physiological record demonstrated otherwise. (Research suggests such people are apt to be more aroused during their sleep than others.)A complaint about this book by one reviewer was that it lacked a specific, detailed plan for self treatment. That lack is now corrected by the accompanying workbook. (Other reviewers and patients I've seen have felt the book alone gave them enough directions to succeed.)Another complaint was that the book told of other sleep disorders and that seemed "filler." Reviewers refute that by describing how other disorders explained what seemed like simple insomnia. Its directions for dealing with possible sleep apnea or depression have probably saved lives and careers. The book has been a gold standard for many years. Partly due to refinement, it's still a gold standard.I sponsored many presentations on sleep at the University of Medicine and Dentistry in New Jersey, about 1-4 of them for most of 25 years. Peter's teaching skill was demonstrated when his workshop was the one that grew in attendance as he taught. Experts who attended started detecting four times as many sleep disorders!Of course no book will please everyone, but this book seems to have come close.

I loved this story and was so engrossed in the plot and the characters. Now and then, you read a book that you become enraptured into the storyline and the characters, and that is exactly what BJ Wane did with this book. What an amazing beginning to a series, I can’t wait for more of the Virginia Bluebloods. I read over 800 books in a year, and so far this year, this one ranks at the very top of my reading list as best book read. It is a book that keeps your attention from page one to the end. This story is so many things; a fling turned to an affair, an adventure in living in spite of a handicap, and an underlying mystery and suspense. Learning who really are your friends and who is the wolf in sheep’s clothing? What a great cast of characters, I loved Nate and Eve together, how he opened up a new world to Eve with experiences, his friendship with his best childhood friends, and how they all played together. The plot kept me captivated and questioning some people’s motives, and the various plot twists kept me in constant suspense. The dialog between different characters showed the clashes in personalities and friendships, sometimes heartwarming and other times sinister. As the story evolves, and little things are said, you see how evil someone can be, and you are on the edge of your seat, and the pages keep turning. In the end, with truths revealed, eyes are wide open to what matters the most.

Okay - this book was so awesome that I decided to get the audible version. DO NOT get the audible version. The narrator was terrible. Not using inflection or understanding how to pause with commas is one thing; I could handle that. However, failure to pronounce words correctly made me flinch. For example: Dwell was “D-wel,” panting was “painting,” labia was “lybia,” and anonymous was mispronounced as “amonomous,” over and over again. Ladies....two of these words were crucial to enjoyment of the scenes and it was deessimated with these ridiculous mistakes. I could not get through the rest of the audible book and I feel like I need to read the book again just to get it off me! Highly recommend the book...trust me though, avoid audible if you can.

I really loved this book so much. It was emotional on every level in a way that was legitimate and real, not just for effect. The writing was fabulous and the storyline was unique. Well worth reading.Eve is a blind woman who was in a terrible accident shortly after high school graduation. She has been blind for a dozen years when the story takes place. Once a year, she fights to forget all that she lost in that accident.Nate is a third generation blue blood in Virginia high society. He doesn't respect his parents and doesn't want to go into the family business. His sister died most of a dozen years before and he too looks for an escape once a year. These two people with broken pasts find each other in this time of need. Their experiences and connection are so strong that they decide to engage in a no strings, short term affair. Of course, this affair grows into a true relationship but both sides are wary based on past relationship failures. To add a little more intrigue there are people on both sides of the relationship hoping it will fail and even maneuvering it to fail. However, while this summary may seem very stereotypical, this book is full of twists and turns that make it unexpected and a little bit more interesting. I can honestly say, I wasn't entirely sure how this book was going to go until the very end. Obviously, or rather, hopefully, we were moving toward a happily ever after but I really wasn't sure until the last couple of chapters. Also, whereas in most blind books, in my experience, the characters are hoping for some resolution of blindness, Eve and Nate, individually and as a couple, assuming they end up together, (NO SPOILERS!) would have honestly been happy and okay with whichever outcome they ended up with.I would also like to note that BJ Wane spent a lot of time on the blindness. It wasn't just a convenient character aspect to be brought up for drama. Eve was blind, she accepted this fact and tells Nate that if their relationship goes anywhere, even before the affair starts, that he has to consider that. Then there was follow through. It came up from both perspectives, not as a matter of weakness be a point of respect and strength. I want to clarify that Eve's character is not just the blind girl. It is more like a fact of life than a character trait, if that makes sense.NOTE: this book, unlike some with seemingly similar storylines, is very sexual. This is not a bad thing simply a warning. If you don't like this type of book, this book probably isn't for you. If you do like it, this is exactly what you're looking for.All of that said, the cost is ridiculous. When I saw it, I was highly doubtful that this book would be worth it and, having received it as a gift, I wasn't sure I would pay that much for it. Having read it, it is a powerful book with an amazing message and really just enjoyable in every way. I would say that the price is still a little high, just based on the length and the fact that it is an ebook but I would probably pay that price having read it. Hard choice and I don't think I helped much. I will say, if the price becomes more reasonable, I would say buy it, no hesitation.

It is the anniversary of the death of a loved one for both Eve and Nate. They are both in the habit of arranging to have no strings attached sex with an anonymous stranger each year on that date. This is how they meet. When it becomes apparent that Eve is blind, Mate is intrigued. They part ways but accidentally meet again when Eve is attempting to scale a rock wall at his friend's facility and again trying ride a horse at another part of the facility. Nate decides to offer Eve an opportunity to combine kinky sex with adventure outings. What starts out as sex only gradually becomes much more. All major characters are well developed, including Holly, Eve's overly possessive best friend. There is enough told of Mate's three kinky best buds that you know they will be subjects of future books.Heat level: 5+Writing: 4Characters: 4.5Story: 5

I already live in the Appalachian Mountains, but I'm driving to Virginia to find Nate and his friends!! Because it goes without saying that I'll be downloading the rest of the books in this series. Nate was bossy, sexy, growly, sweet and incredibly intuitive to Eve's needs. And Eve just made me want to cheer for her with every new accomplishment she succeeded at as well as wanting her as my friend. A solid read with characters you feel like you know, a villain or two to despise and a new book boyfriend that made me want to lick my Kindle! This one gets a resounding "wet-panties", thumbs up. 😄

For my wife's birthday her BFF's are taking her to New York. One of her must do's is bike riding through Central Park. I bought her this book so she could familiarize herself with the park and some of the features to see. The book is awesome !! We both enjoyed reading and discussing the book. The book divides the park into 4-sections with pictures and descriptions of various highlights in each section. And, the reverse side of the dust cover is a great map of Central Park. Her trip is planned for late April, 2019 and she will take the book along as her guide.

This book, by the Central Park Conservancy is stunning! It is smaller in size than 8x10 inches, so you can bring it with you when you visit. Stunning photographs, beautifully seen, and fascinating text about so many of the small details that you might ordinarily miss. You NEED this book!

This book is indispensable for walking in Central Park; in plain terms, it is simply necessary for "Seeing Central Park" properly, the way it should. All parts of this mega-park are gorgeous, and this book details each and every corner of it. All the statues and monuments are explained, as are all the pathways, roads, structures and bodies of water. The park's fascinating history is given in great detail. Perhaps the best feature of the book is the pictures, each and every one stunning in its own right. A person with enough time on his/her hands should take a full day, no less, to see Central Park - using this book is an absolute must!

I just got this book in the mail today and it is absolutely delightful! It is full of gorgeous photographs and information about the intricacies of Central Park and I can't wait to read the text to learn more about NYC's amazing work of art that is Central Park. It looks like Sara Cedar Miller has done an exceptional job of sharing the history of the park's creation and its designers. I think it's amazing that the people of New York had the foresight to preserve such a large section of Manhattan Island as a park that all could enjoy. I wonder what the designers would say if they could see it now!The book has a smaller page size than some of our other "coffee table" books, but sometimes something smaller invites you for a closer look. It's beautifully presented in hard back form, and the dust cover has a map of Central Park on the reverse side. It's almost too pretty to carry along for a visit to the park! The book divides the Park into three sections and features a good balance of text and photographs of the many design elements of areas in the park. Some of the photos spread across two pages and others are smaller close-ups of more intricate decorations or embellishments on bridges and buildings. I love the fact that Sara Cedar Miller has included photos from all of the seasons, from the flowering fruit trees to snow-covered tree branches. Our son lives in Manhattan and we've visited the Park several times but have never explored it fully (nor has he!). Now that we have this book I'm sure we'll make more forays into the Park, bolstered by what Sara has presented to us in her delightful book. I would highly recommend it to anyone who is interested in learning more about "the World's Greatest Urban Park."

After reading a Kathy Reichs book with a crime taking place in Central Park, I realized in all the visits I'd made, I never knew much about the park. This small book gives excellent descriptions of every section of the park. A good gift.

What an incredible little book!! If you enjoyed Sara Cedar Miller's "Central Park: An American Masterpiece" you'll definitely enjoy "Seeing Central Park". Miller's knowledge of the park is unparalleled, and her intelligent and tender writing humanizes the park even for those of us who live in New York, and walk through the park and enjoy it on a regular basis. I rarely review things but having recently given this book as a gift to a few friends and getting even for those who don't live in New York, learning about the history and contribution to the city which Olmstead and Vaux made when they designed the park. I've bought a case of the books as Christmas presents for various friends who have seen my copy of the book and marveled over the beauty of the pictures of the park and the city which surrounds it. Its a true gift for any lover of NYC.Most importantly - the content and production of the book are stellar - the photos are beautiful and unlike most traditional 'guidebooks' the quality of printing is exquisite. The book is arranged in sections of ascending segments of the streets and then by the individual areas which are contained in that 10 block chunk of streets. There is also an adorable and useful map printed on the inside of the dust jacket so you can orient yourself in the park as you read through the book.Miller's photography and writing are stellar - witty and informative, the book seems more like an informative conversation than a lecture. An excellent purchase to be sure!

I became interested in Central Park after learning how large it is and that it is totally man made. I. E. Planned and landscaped. I’ve never been there and most likely never will be. The book was the next best thing. Beautiful pictures, history, and descriptions of places of interest. Just what I was looking for.

Excellent book on Central Park! Full of interesting information and gorgeous pictures.
