Another great read for the Zoo Crew. Spoiler alert. This one starts with Lucas Webb. Lucas just returned from tours of duty in the Middle East. He's Spec Ops and a sniper.Lucas was granted a compassionate out of the military when his father was dying and he had to return home and take over the family ranch. He hurried home and his father gave him the facts about the ranch and what was going on. He died three days later. Neither Lucas or his father let sister Sarah know what was going on because they didn't want her involved. Sara has no idea what's been going on.Right now Lucas headed back to the Ag meeting he'd been attending. A meeting where he'd been shut down after trying to ask a question. Shut down by Hoyt Tierney, a big rancher, who jointly ran the meetings with Lucy Pritchett another rancher. Lucas has his fathers 30.06 and some tracer rounds.Once there he opens fire at the meeting. He didn't hit anyone, mainly because he wasn't intending to hit anyone. If he had intended to hit someone, that someone would have been killed right then and there. A sniper he is. He just blew the eyes out of the photo of Tierney on the wall with tracer rounds. Those rounds turned everything bright and red. Lucas was then shot three times by Hank MciIivane a man hired by Tierney to take care of security for his ranch and what he does on that ranch.Lucas was hit three times once in the lungs. Once at the hospital and out of surgery he's put in a coma so his body can heal. In ten days he'll be awakened so Sheriff Pratt can arrest him. Pratt visits Sarah in Lucas's room. A place she's been since the whole thing happened. Pratt questions Sara. A Sarah who has no clue as to why Lucas did what he did something that she will find out much later. The County Attorney Goslin will be throwing the book at Lucas and looking for life in prison on attempted murder charges. A Goslin who's looking to further her career by using Lucas.Sara calls her friend Rink. A Rink who contact Drake Bell and of course the Zoo Crew. Its Christmas and the Zoo Crew is getting read for it. Ajax is headed home which is something he hardly ever does. His Mother has demanded he come home. Ajax thinks she's trying to set him up again. Ajax is not happy but he's headed to Boston for Christmas.Drake got Ava and her things to the airport and Ava is more than ready to leave Montana. An Ava who's headed back for Louisiana. An Ava Drake will miss.Drake is still trying to talk Kade into that PI license. A Drake who's invited to the Kuehl home for food. More food than any of them can eat. Kade and Sage's Mom is a great cook and Dad talks about what happened in Hamilton. The shooting. Its the first Drake, Sage and Kade have heard of it. It won't be the last though once Rink calls. So begins one damned fine read. This one has Drake, Kade, Sage, Ajax, Lucas, Sara, Rink, Sheriff Pratt, Tierney, Mcllvane, cows, SA Goslin who's looking to make a name for herself and using Lucas to do so, press conferences, cattle, a Tierney who is doing his best to save his cattle, ranch and money, a Tierney who isn't above murder to get what he wants, brands, brands that have been tampered with, an attempt on Lucas, a Sara who foils that attack, a Drake talking with those at the Ag meeting to get an idea of what happened, a Drake who after talking with a biologist is starting to get a clue about what happened and why, a Mcllvane who tails Drake, the Home Guard, General Jensen, those in the Home Guard who know Mcllvane and have no liking for him at all, brucellosis, winter in Missoula a showdown between the Zoo Crew and Mcllvane , the Winter Dance and Drake and the Zoo crew doing their best to get the truth help a rancher and his sister and foil the bad guys.Five Stars. Great read.

The zoo Crew Series is once again a winner for Dustin Stevens. the biggest fault in all his books is poor editing and the claim at the ending of all his books that he reads reviews. If he truly did he would cleanup his editing and really sky rocket. His development of characters and for the most part consistency really engages the reader to buy his next addition....... I would also truly like to thank the author (no faith he is reading this, but just in case).... To say thank you for providing sequels that do not drop the story in the middle and expect readers to purchase.. Hats off for completing a full storyline in each novel.. Errors and all your work is worth reading ..thanks😀

The "head" of the Zoo Crew, more by default than anything else, Drake, had been a football star during his undergrad days; now, last year of law school, Drake can not and will not turn his back on those that can't help themselves. And, no matter what is happening, he knows the Zoo Crew have his back -- it's just how they roll. When a huge cattle barron sets out to deceive to obtain what he wants, he didn't count on being discovered. When he is, shots are fired -- by an army sniper, no less! Instead of him fighting for his life, he believe he has gotten what he wants and that everything is now in place to make his final move! Ahhh, but he knows nothing about the Crew and their friends . . . none of them will turn their back on a young woman, who just days before had buried her father, and now whose brother, recently returned from the Army, is fighting for his life and in a coma!

Story takes such an interesting turn - "who wouda' thunk" - very well written. Makes you think about public opinion and perception versus reality. Sometimes we over think things and come to the wrong conclusion. Better to ask why than assume you know the mind of someone else.

Very good story involving a recently discharged Army sniper who shoots up a local Agriculture meeting and ends up getting shot himself. As the shooter recovers in a hospital bed, his sister hires Drake Bell to represent her brother, and he's determined to figure out why the vet went off. The Zoo Crew all pitch in, helping Drake with his investigation, and they uncover quite a large conspiracy going on. Vividly-described locales, likeable main characters, and an interesting story make this book a winner. Not quite deep enough to warrant five stars, but it's still a well-written book about the underdog battling against the local powers-that-be. Chalk one up for the little guy!

It's not very often that a novel revolves, in part, around brand stealing unless it's of a 'western' genre but this novel does just that as one of the Zoo crew members, a law student, endeavours to find the reason behind a shooting at a local agricultural meeting. The young man who did the shooting was himself shot and arrested and it is only when he finally comes out of a coma that the truth is slowly revealed. The story then endeavours to discover the reasons behind the initial shooting and the arrest. By thoroughly digging away we are kept in suspense as it all unfolds. A very interesting tale which holds your interest and I can recommend it to future readers.

Great story! Quite an eventful 8 day period between Christmas and New Year. Folks traveling for the Holiday. New friends introduced. And a solid story with intrigue unfolding. You are going to love it!!

Pretty good yarnSome of the conversations are a bit weakVillain was first called ex marine and then ex armyExplanation of weapon was very bad. Dead wrong on type of rifle4 young people in Montana and none own a gun is laughable

''FDM completely enhanced my athletic ability. Without the manipulations, my athletic career would be coming to an end. I've made gains I didn't think I was capable of before.'' --Erica Meckel, World Eskimo Indian Olympic and Arctic Winter Games Gold Medalist ''Conditions that took weeks or months to improve now take two to four visits, sometimes one visit, with FDM. It's drastically reduced the number of injections I do, the number of consultations I order, and the number of trials of OMM. --Jose S. Figueroa, DO, Board Certified PM&R, NMM/OMMPhysician, Clinician and Assistant Professor, OMM Dept., Des Moines University ''This model of diagnosis and treatment finally gives the fascial system the attention it deserves. As the former dean of the Pacific Northwest University College of Osteopathic Medicine, the faculty and I were impressed with how quickly students grasp these concepts and utilize the skills that Dr. Capistrant shares in this engaging and informative book.'' -- --Robyn Phillips-Madson, DO, MPH, Founding Dean, University of the Incarnate Word School of Osteopathic Medicine, San Antonio, Texas

I've suffered from long standing, chronic low level (yet annoying) neck and thoracic pain for over 11 years. Being a physical therapist myself, I have tried everything including seeing many many massage therapists, physical therapists, chiropractors, naturopaths and acupuncturists and have spent hundreds of dollars on this chronic problem. Everything helped but never really took the pain away nor the constant discomfort that I felt. It became my new "normal".I found a Physical Therapist who treated my neck and upper back using the Fascial Distortion Model, and for literally 6 minutes, the pain was completely dissolved. 11 years of pain! GONE. Are you kidding me??! I was completely dumbfounded. I had range of motion on my neck that I've never reached - beyond normal ROM. Truly life-changing. When you've lived in low level chronic pain for so long, your brain starts to think it is normal and would not know what "pain-free" feels like! Now I'm learning these skills, and completely implementing this model with a paradigm shift in my practice of physical therapy! This, including all the stuff I've learned through the years! Thank you FDM and thank you to my PT Matt! I've purchased 5 of these books and they are all reading materials in the waiting area of my clinic.

For any med student, especially an osteopathic med student, or patient of chronic pain this is a great read. Explains how the slightest changes in our body can cause major pain and what we can do to realign it to its proper arrangement and by so doing relieving pain. Definitely an introduction to the FDM model (doesn't get too complicated) and an easy read for both student and patient.

great insight into this treatment

Great book I have had long term back issues resolved by my PT using these techniques.

Best companion to techniques and keeping pain in check from

Love it

Informative book on FDM but he could have left out all of his practical applications.

This is the first book review I've ever written. I work at a small Minnesota publishing company and I know so many authors that it's personally awkward, not to mention a conflict of interest, to review books. I'm making an exception on this one. A few months ago my company published Dr. Capistrant's book. I'm very proud of it; I think it's well done, well written, easy to read and comprehend, and pretty intriguing, but in my heart, I thought this whole concept is probably too good to be true. The fascial distortion model just doesn't square with everything I know about medicine and healing. Then last Thursday morning I sprained my right ankle. New shoes, pouring rain, big hurry. It was bad--I cried like a little kid, for an embarrassing length of time. Luckily my husband was home, witnessed the whole thing, and was available to drive me to my clinic. I mentioned this book to my doctor (a pretty open-minded guy) and asked him if he knew anything about manipulating distorted fascia to fix a sprained ankle. He said no, it's not possible. The only thing that heals a sprained ankle is time. He put me on crutches and in a boot that looks like something a Storm Trooper would wear, and told me not to drive for six weeks. I'm a working mom, and that's a real hardship on our family. Plus, the Minnesota summer is so short--it's demoralizing to have to miss any of it, and six weeks is MOST of it. I had to cancel longstanding plans to visit a friend's cabin, and instead spent my lame (literally) three-day weekend hobbling from the bed to the couch to the bed, feeling very sorry for myself. On Saturday night, in despair, I emailed Dr. Capistrant, who lives in Alaska. I asked him if he could recommend a provider in the Twin Cities who knows this method. He got back to me and said he just happens to BE in the Twin Cities and is flying home the next morning. I begged him to look at my ankle and he agreed, if I'd meet him near the airport, or where he was staying, as he was without a car.My husband was very leery of the whole thing. He thought Dr. Capistrant would damage my foot and make it worse, and he repeated everything my primary doc said about needing time to heal. I told him that I'm a grown-a** woman and I'll take a cab if I have to. Finally he agreed to drive me, but registered his strong disapproval. It was tense. Now, on top of everything else, I had marital capital at stake. If this didn't work, it would be a very long six weeks (or more!) of being cared for and ferried around by my husband...Sunday morning he drove me to where Dr. Capistrant was staying, and watched Dr. Capistrant work, using nothing more than his hands to manipulate the fascia in my leg and foot. I was expecting it to hurt like hell, but it wasn't bad--weird, but not bad. At one point Dr. Capistrant was running his thumb down from my knee to my foot and I said, "You've got some really sharp fingernails!"He said, "I don't have any fingernails." He was using the pad of his thumb, not the tip, to release a long trigger band in my calf. It felt like it was being sliced, and then it just melted away. Then he did something to my foot that felt like a bunch of bubble wrap popping inside. He found a spot and pressed on it quite hard until I felt something just dissolve. Within two minutes I was walking without pain. In three minutes I could stand on one foot (the sprained foot). In five minutes I could stand on my tiptoes. My husband was teary-eyed and kind of in shock. I asked him later what he was thinking when he watched me walk. He said, "I thought you just wanted to be right so badly that you tricked your mind into ignoring the pain and faking it." (Any other married people out there relate to that sentiment?)We threw my boot and crutches in the trunk and got Dr. Capistrant to Alaska Airlines right on time. He gave me my summer back, and all I gave him was a ride to the airport. Today, just four days after my injury, I'm walking with ease, I have no pain, and I'm the happiest girl in the whole USA. I drove myself to work this morning, and I'm heading back to my clinic on my lunch hour to see if I can get a refund for these $80 crutches and this $350 boot, and I'm giving my doc a copy of this book, on me.I recommend "Why Does it Hurt?" to any American interested in simple, effective health care that doesn't rely on expensive drugs, tests, equipment, or unending follow-up therapy. The Fascial Distortion Model is not a panacea--it can't be applied to all health issues-- but it's an astounding and simple solution for many pains and problems that can't be explained or solved by other methods.----------------------------------------------------FOUR HOURS LATER: For sale, crutches and boot, barely used.

The New Deal's Forest Army: How the Civilian Conservation Corps Worked (How Things Worked)

Review

"This is an impressive history of the Civilian Conservation Corps. Alexander artfully balances granular detail with a sure sense of the larger narrative, surpassing the most authoritative account of the CCC we’ve had to date." (Phillip G. Payne, St. Bonaventure University, author of Crash! How the Boom and Bust of the 1920s Worked)"This book delivers an extraordinary and valuable examination of one of the New Deal’s most well-known relief and recovery programs, the Civilian Conservation Corps. Readers will appreciate the continued relevance that Benjamin Alexander’s well-written history holds for understanding our present moment." (Jason Scott Smith, University of New Mexico, author of Building New Deal Liberalism: The Political Economy of Public Works, 1933–1956)"Alexander's short work is useful in that it offers an introduction to the program overall and insight into its participants' experiences, with a clear narratuve distilled from an impressive array of sources." (Kim Jarvis H-Net)"Alexander has undertaken an impressive amount of primary research for this project... As a result, he has un-earthed some extremely significant, and understudied, information on the Corps. involving the history of several female CCC camps as well as the experiences of African-American, Native-American, and Mexican-American enrollees. Although I, myself, have written a book about the CCC, The New Deal's Forest Army taught me new, interesting, and important facts about the program." (Neil M. Maher, New Jersey Institute of Technology and Rutgers University Environmental History)

In 1967 Duke University Press published the 240-page-long "The Civilian Conservation Corps, 1933-1942: A New Deal Case Study" by John A. Salmond. Salmond diligently mined primary sources such as government documents, letters and newspapers giving us a balanced and incisive look at the most popular New Deal program. Indeed most of the foot notes in his book are from primary sources. While Salmond’s book focuses on Washington he does not neglect the life of those who participated in the program and the work they did. He addresses how the CCC came to be and why it was disbanded in 1942. Only a few other scholars have successfully attempted to deal with the big picture of the CCC such as Christine Pfaff’s book on the CCC Bureau of Reclamation camps and John C. Paige’s administrative history of the CCC and the National Park Service. A number of books on the CCC have been published by the popular press but none have the authority, detail and thoroughness of Salmond’s book. And until now only a few detailed studies of the CCC at the state level have been completed including Nevada, Connecticut, New Mexico, Minnesota, North Carolina, Alabama and mine for Colorado and Arizona. So it is a welcome occurrence that Johns Hopkins University Press has published this new book as part of their How Things Worked series. This new book is divided into sections dealing with how the CCC came about, how boys joined, how they labored and learned, how they spent their leisure time and the end of the CCC. Alexander’s writing is inviting, clear and easy to read.Unfortunately the book is only 179 pages long, surely not enough to deal with such a large, lengthy and complex organization. He very heavily uses secondary sources such as dissertations and history books written decades after the CCC. Yet there is no mention in the book's bibliographic essay of Harley E. Jolley’s excellent study of the CCC in North Carolina, Robert J. Moore’s Arizona and Wisconsin studies, Kathleen Duxbury’s works dealing with the CCC Artists Program, the excellent works about the Texas state parks CCC work by Jim Steely and others as well as my detailed studies of the CCC in Arizona and Colorado. As a result of his heavy use of secondary sources this book does not add significant new knowledge of the CCC. Sadly the neglect of at least one key primary source namely the official final report of the CCC published in 1942 has resulted in a number of errors of fact in the book. The incorrect numbers include the total number of CCC enrollees, the number of trees they planted (three billion not "well over two billion"), miles of telephone line erected, number of man days fighting forest fires and the highest number of enrollees reached (520,000 not 502,000).Alexander states that “partisanship and cronyism played a huge part” in the hiring of CCC superintendents and foremen (page 48). According to him “political patronage” “ran rampant in the CCC” (page 122). However Salmond wrote the “CCC was never riddled with politics” (page 104). Salmond wrote that politics did enter into the organization “yet its effect was mild” (page 105). My research on the CCC in Arizona and Colorado revealed some hints of partisanship but surely no pattern of favoritism. Indeed I view the issue of partisanship in the CCC as still largely a subject in need of more serious scholarship.Salmond's essential CCC book has not yeat been surpassed.
