The story she tells is so honest and encouraging and her writing is terrific. I love it and I am happy for her and the release of such a wonderful book. I know God's going to do great things with it, and with her."―Rory Feek, singer/songwriter p.p1 {margin: 0.0px 0.0px 0.0px 0.0px; font: 11.0px Helvetica} span.s1 {font-kerning: none} "Feeling imperfect? There are mom-books for that - offering solace in faith and welcome infusions of humor as well. Jamie Sumner, in Unbound: Finding Freedom from Unrealistic Expectations of Motherhood (FaithWords, April 10) describes her journey through infertility and special needs parenting. Her trip has not been easy, but Sumner found in the Bible stories of women who show her comfort, hope, companionship and triumph in releasing herself in God's hands."―Publishers Weekly"Jamie takes us all on her journey of faith, hope, determination, and courage. Her personal stories, interwoven with women from the Bible, allow us to understand how our own 'paths' and struggles are similar to theirs. She does so with quick wit, clever insight, and a true sense of understanding that, at the heart of it all, God is in control. She reminds us to stay in the present and appreciate the moments of our lives. I love her quote: 'There was a reason. I didn't see any of that in the moment, but I see it now. I see the tangled mess that turned into a safety net which brought our son into this world.'"―Chantai Snellgrove, Founder/Publisher, Parenting Special Needs Magazine"When the body suddenly betrays expectation, Jamie Sumner pitches into doubt and action, asking God and science to bring her the child she yearns for. The author invites us into the exclusive world of fertility treatments and NICUs, shattering ultrasounds and difficult phone calls. Funny, self-deprecating and familiar as a gal pal, she is as likely to casually mention Sarah and Hagar as Care Bears and "Lost". Sumner uses her own story as an allegory to illuminate both faith and its conjoined sister, doubt. She draws readers in with guided meditations, making the book part memoir, part interactive study, all engaging and bittersweet."―Camille-Yvette Welsch, Reviews editor at Literary Mama, author of Full"As a woman who's struggled with infertility for over four years, I felt such a connection to Jamie and her story through reading this work of love. There's something crazy about this world of trying-to-conceive that no one tells you about: the friendships you make through sharing the mutually exhaustive trials and tribulations of infertility. I believe there's a reason for everything in my heart of hearts, and as I come off my second FET with no bump yet to show, I know there is a reason God brought me to Jamie to review this book-to remind me as she so eloquently put, 'God has a plan He's already stitched it together for you and it is masterful and, lucky for all of us, already complete.' So, to my fellow #ttcsisters, if you're looking for a friend on this bumpy ride, I would definitely recommend cozying up with UNBOUND to laugh, cry, and seek that friend who gets you during this trying time. You are not alone, and Jamie will remind you of that!"―Elizabeth Shaw, MS, RDN, CLT, Fertility Nutrition Expert, writer for Self and Fit Pregnancy, founder of BumpstoBaby.com, Co-Author Fertility Foods Cookbook"Eloquent and inspiring, UNBOUND connects modern-day motherhood with the stories of women found throughout scripture. Jamie Sumner peels back the outer layers of her own journey though infertility and raising children with special needs, and exposes heart-warming and relatable accounts of hardship, perseverance, and growth. Sumner sings truth and encouragement, grounded in biblical verses, reminding us all to stay present through this beautifully complicated season of raising tiny humans."―Kristin M. Helms, author of From Boardroom to Baby: A Roadmap for Career Women Transitioning to Stay-At-Home Moms p.p1 {margin: 0.0px 0.0px 0.0px 0.0px; font: 10.0px Arial} span.s1 {font-kerning: none} "Jamie Sumner approaches the ups and downs of motherhood with honesty and wit, making us all feel a little better about the job we're doing...while at the same time inspiring us through the fact that we're not alone. Women through history -- from the ancient Old Testament to now -- have all struggled to find the balance of their identity in Christ and as mothers. This book is balm for our souls."― p.p1 {margin: 0.0px 0.0px 0.0px 0.0px; font: 11.0px Times} span.s1 {font-kerning: none} Kate Etue, co-author of The Essential Five: A Grown-Up Girl's Handbook for Everything"With grace, honesty, humor, and an uncanny ability to braid her story seamlessly with biblical examples, Jamie Sumner shares a deeply personal, tender, and yet arduous journey into motherhood. Hers isn't a straight, freshly paved path. No. There are pot holes and U-turns, road blocks and red lights. But these obstacles are only part of the story. UNBOUND is really about yielding to a plan different than one's own. It's about yielding to a God who knows us and loves us, and leads us on the path everlasting. This isn't just Jamie's story. It's everyone's. I cried at the end of this book."―Gillian Marchenko, author of Sun Shine Down: A Memoir and Still Life: A Memoir of Living Fully with Depression"Jamie Sumner is a writer of words women need to read.Women will joyfully cheer that in Unbound, Sumner talks about the little--discussed realities of infertility and miscarriage. She then takes us forward through the getting and the appreciation of motherhood. Brilliantly, she ties together her stories with those of biblical females and makes all of us moms find freedom from our unrealistic expectations as we claim our God-given strength. This is a joy of a read."―Sarah Philpott, PhD, author of Loved Baby: 31 Devotions Helping You Grieve and Cherish Your Child After Pregnancy Loss (connect with her at allamericanmom.net)

Okay, so I have a confession to make. Up to the point of reading Jamie Sumner’s new book, I’ve taken for granted one of the most precious gifts God’s given me. Not once, not twice, but THREE times God blessed me with an easy peasy experience of getting pregnant, carrying to full-term, and delivering a healthy child into my world. Aside from some morning sickness and a scare with our second son who stopped breathing momentarily at 5-days-old because of reflux, my journey of baby making was simple. I even weathered three natural child births without the numbing stuff. (But I might have cussed like a sailor during one of them…)I’ve heard many stories and have prayed for countless mommas struggling with infertility, complications, miscarriages, etc. But not until I read Jamie’s book did I recognize how I’d barely scratched the surface of gratitude for my waltz into motherhood.Reading about Jamie’s path towards the birth of her first miracle, Charlie, unraveled me. What this dear woman endured is beyond comprehension for someone on the outside looking in. Yet, somehow Jamie weaved words with delicate precision to draw the reader into every gripping detail with beauty and grace. This book left me awestruck and inspired by Jamie’s courage and resolve in her pursuit of becoming a mom against inconceivable odds. She gives new meaning to spiritual surrender, which is not to say she didn’t battle with trust issues along the way. You’ll find her honesty refreshing as you come to realize she is just like the rest of us who, when facing overwhelming challenges, struggle to put one front in front of the other along our walk of faith.Adding to what is already a powerful and moving testimony by Jamie, is her brilliance in intertwining her circumstances with those of fearless Biblical women. Women who had to overcome what seemed like insurmountable situations. Jamie gives us an opportunity to lean into and find hope in these timeless stories. As far as the specifics of Jamie’s story, I don’t want to give anything away up front. You deserve to hear the details straight from Jamie’s beautiful heart and empowering spirit. Her words are destined to transform you and deepen your faith in countless ways.

Every woman's journey into motherhood is different. Some women only need their husbands to look at them and they find themselves pregnant. Others pursue countless specialists in hopes of hearing the continuous fluttering of a little heart over the ultrasound. Some must hire lawyers and go in search of children they can call their own. Some are somewhere in between or a combination of them all. No matter what prompted your journey into motherhood, it's safe to assume that you had a plan or a vision of how you thought things would go. And it's safe to assume that probably only a few hours in, you quickly realized that life hardly ever goes according to plan.Jamie Sumner takes you through her awe inspiring journey into motherhood. Nothing went according to her plan, and yet through it all, God was faithful. She paints a realistic picture of the anguish and struggle infertility and loss can bring. She also reminds us of the unspeakable joy and peace that can come from completely surrendering to God in the best and worst of times. Jamie provides countless examples of women in the Bible who faced a range of situations and yet still clung to their faith and were made whole in the end, even if the end did not look exactly like they had planned. This book is filled with incredible truths that every mother should hear no matter what her journey and faith look like. With incredible wit, heart-wrenching grief, and unspeakable joy, Jamie pulls you into her story and along the way you find pieces of yourself that you may have forgotten existed and by the end, you feel whole and ready to follow whatever path this thing called motherhood takes you.

What a special book! I’m glad I got the chance to read it and not only learn more about the author, but also receive reminders of strong women of the Bible. It was my pleasure and I read it in a few evenings. I never got bored. I always wondered what will happen next and last but not least: wow, what a strong mother! Xo

Jamie does a beautiful job chronicling her difficult journey to become a mother. Even in the times of desperate pain, she communicates what she went through with grace and humor. It's especially useful for Christian women, as she ties each of her chapters to a woman in the Bible. She illuminated her own story, their stories, and even my own with these adept comparisons. Highly recommended to all moms, especially those dealing with infertility or children who have medical issues.

Jamie shares about her tumultuous journey into motherhood with heart-wrenching honesty and beautiful story-telling. Her gripping writing made me grieve with her, celebrate with her, and engage God through all her peaks and valleys. It gave me a greater glimpse into the pain of infertility and the heartache of life-altering diagnoses, while also giving me a greater appreciation for the miracle and value of every life. I highly recommend this book!

Unbound tells a beautiful story of the challenges of infertility and the joys of becoming a mother under difficult circumstances. I loved how Jamie Summer related her personal struggles to female Biblical characters to show how every mother faces ups and downs throughout her journey. - Sarah Whitman

Wonderful history books! I stumbled upon this series looking to supplement our existing homeschool curriculum--It quickly became our new curriculum! It's written in such an engaging narrative style and does a great job of not only explaining the important events, but the causes of them and reasons for them. It has made history come alive--I'm a history fan for the first time in my life--and it's my 4th and 6th graders' favorite subject. I think this book would work for around 3rd graders through at least middle school, if not high school. I can't begin to count all of the great discussions we've had sparked by these books. We've read 3 volumes and I just ordered the next. My only negative is that the kindle doesn't include all the side notes, as other reviews have mentioned. My kids have enjoyed reading on their tablets for a change, and it's so much more economical if everyone wants their own copy to read, but we are going back to the print for the next volume. I recommend it highly.

These are very well-written books and have a contemporary approach to explaining history to young minds. If you are concerned about 'revisionist history', not to worry...these books are historically accurate. They are well laid out and have interesting side facts as well as illustrations and photos, maps, etc.

We have been using this series for two years now for American history. It is a great backgroud reader. It is colorful and a narrative and the chapters are short which makes for easy lesson planning. What we do is read through this series in the background and on top of that we do "projects" on major subjects. Right now we're doing a lapbook on the Constitution. Our next project (unit study) will be on slavery. I nevery get any complaints on having to read this book. In fact, my son usually forgets to stop and reads too far!

My daughter read most of this series in 8th grade as her home-school history text. She really enjoyed it. It sparked a deeper interest in history for her. I have just bought the first four books which we were missing so that my 7th and 9th graders can read the whole series in this next school year. I think these books tell the history in more of a story form and go into more detail than regular textbooks. That is what makes it so interesting for students.

These books make history interesting. I love the entire series, as do my 8 and 10 yr olds.

We used the series while homeschooling. It was not just a lot of dry facts to be memorized (like when I was in school). It told the story in an interesting way and put it into context. The list of other resources was helpful, too.

I was very disappointed that all the pictures, captions and side notes in the original book were not included in the Kindle version. There should be some notification so that the purchaser is aware prior to purchase. I feel that my child is missing vital information by not having these included.

I gave this book 5 stars because it totally engages my students. They understand the "story" part of history with the book, and are very enthusiastic about it. Although it leaves out many details, using it in conjunction with a classic textbook provides students with a rich learning experience.
