About the Author

Eleanor Coerr was born in Kamsack, Saskatchewan, Canada, and grew up in Saskatoon. This story is based on a real girl who lived during WWII when the US dropped an atom bomb on Hiroshima, Japan. She was a toddler at the time, but she received leukemia due to it about ten years later. She makes paper cranes in hopes that she will get better.I read this book to my sons and they really enjoyed learning some history and were sad about learning the destruction done to the children and people who survived and died because of the bomb. It really opened their eyes to understanding the pain and destruction left behind due to wars.We made origami paper cranes after finishing this book and the boys had a really nice time learning and playing with their cranes afterwards.

I purchased this book for my granddaughter who is getting married on the 23rd of Aug 2014. She has made 1000 paper cranes as the focal point of her wedding décor because of this book. I had asked her what the significance of the paper cranes were and she told me about the book so I had to go online and read up on and was completely mesmerized about the story and even more so when I learned that it was a true story. I had to purchase the book of course and the day I received it, I read it from cover to cover and had a good cry. I gave the book to my granddaughter for a wedding shower gift after learning that she did not have a copy. ThanksPat Becker

There is so much to learn from the time period, and main character Sadako. My claim for this book is: Sadako Sasaki’s life is both historical and moving, as it takes you through, the descriptive language keeps you interested, the strong emotions make you feeling so much throughout the story, and you’ll see all the heartfelt moments. In the end you will learn about perseverance and hope. This is a story about an eleven year old girl called Sadako, who lives in Hiroshima Japan. Her story takes place in 1955 around the time the atom bomb was dropped in Japan. This bomb brought a lot of radiation to Japan, and brought on the disease called ‘Leukemia’. Sadako’s life changed completely, as she spends the remainder of her life now in hospital. She has to swallow pills and have injections every day. Her life has forever changed. The book ‘Sadako and the Thousand Paper Cranes’ is a heartfelt story. It says in the text, “ Suddenly everything seemed to whirl around her as she sank into the ground. [...] A few minutes later she was in hospital.” (page 26) In this part of the story Sadako is getting rushed to hospital because she had a signs of Leukemia, this shows how Sadako’s life is scary, this made me feel so bad for her. (My heart melted) This book has so much descriptive language I was always so interested because of it. The author writes, “They floated out to sea like a swarm of fireflies against the dark water.” (page 30) This piece of evidence shows how descriptive and interesting this \\book can be.This story has a lot of parts with strong emotions that will fill you with emotions throughout the entire story. The text says, “Sadako realized she had Leukemia, but what she also new was that some patients recovered from the disease. She never stopped hoping she would get well soon.” (page 48) At this part of the story Sadako has realized that there’s a possibility she could recover from Leukemia. This shows how powerful these strong emotions can be.In conclusion you and the readers will learn about how Sadako inspires hope and peace to this day. I rate this book five out of five stars and two thumbs up. You’ll never be able to stop turning the pages.

Fabulous true story. Can open up discussions for students with a classmate with critical health issues. As a retired teacher who taught this book, I would recommend ongoing discussion as it is being read. Bought it for a granddaughter and included a pack of origami paper, as directions for folding the crane are in the back.

This story is inspirational.A few friends and I have taken on folding one million cranes and delivering them to the Pease Memorial Ceremony so as part of that effort I thought I should order the book telling the story of Sadako and her cranes. I ordered the wrong book by mistake. Yes it was about the same person and events but that book was such a discouragement that I doubt we would have taken on the project if this had been the book read by the others in our group.I promptly ordered the this book. The original by Eleanor Coerr entitled Sadako and the Thousand Paper Cranes. What a difference! Yes it is the same story but this time presented in such an inspirational, hopeful way as opposed to the morose, judgmental tone of the other.

My 5 year old fell in love with this book. I was debating whether to read something so "harsh" to him (about the bombings in Japan), but in the end, I'm glad I did. The book is so well written he was just fine without having tons of pictures. He handled the material well. It was sad to read it to him, but I'm so glad I did. He learned about some of the truths of our harsh world and I think he will be a better, more well-rounded person for it. He really connected with the characters and could empathize with their struggles. I remember reading this book as a kid and loving it. I'm so surprised how well my kindergartener took this book. I'm not recommending it for most kindergarteners, my son is mature and handles things like this well. But in general, this book will encourage empathy, diversity, and kindness in any child who is exposed to it.

One of my all time favorite books. I read this as a child and bought this copy for my niece so that she, too, could read it and never be the same again, too. This is one of those books that changes a person and that it's for a young reader is more impressive.It tells the true story of a girl that develops leukemia at a young age and starts folding paper cranes because if she can fold a thousand her wish will be granted.This book is a book of hope and desperation and a reminder of the horrors of war as her cancer was a result, albeit many years later, of the US bombing of Hiroshima when she was just two.

I read this excellent little book and am really surprised at the furor and backlash. I'm not naive about the extent to which the most traditionalist Catholics and other Christians can get worked up about LGBT issues. But, honestly, I think they are ranting about something that isn't there. (Not to mention making personal attacks against Father Martin.) The book makes a perfectly appropriate appeal--kind and gentle, which is Fr. Jim's way--that the Church treat LGBT members with respect, compassion, and sensitivity. Then he takes equal time (3 chapters) to appeal to LGBT individuals to treat Church leadership with respect, compassion, and sensitivity. The last half of the book is an offering of scripture passages with questions for meditation and ideas for prayer. At no point does he endorse gay marriage or, for that matter, homosexual acts. He doesn't condemn them either. That's not the purpose of the book. I found nothing whatever inconsistent with Church teaching. Or the Gospels.

Martin bases his main argument on an appeal to emotion and cites no real theology or tradition of the church. A good portion of the organizations he cites affiliation with are in open and direct disobedience of church teaching and one has even been formally ordered to stop by the Vatican (New Ways Ministry). Martin broadens his definition of homophobia to include all people who promote church teaching and refuses to mention call to chastity. If the church adopts this sort of ministry to LGBT it is no ministry at all.

Respect yes. Sensitivity yes. Compassion yes. No mention of the truth in this book. It leaves one confused and wondering where to go with Church teaching since its mention was seemingly an embarrassment. No mention of how to convey Church teaching on same sex attraction in a compassionate, sensitive and respectful way. In no way does this book actually support Church teaching on same sex attraction and same sex actions since it was barely mentioned and failed to build upon that teaching.

This is a book that has generated quite a bit of controversy, so I decided to do my own due diligence. It is a short, edifying read.The book is divided into 3 sections, the Bridge section, the Meditation and Reflection section, and a short prayer section at the end.Fr. Martin’s approach is organized around the Catechism of the Catholic Church (Pt. 3, Sec. 2, Ch. 2, Article 6) paragraph No. 2358 in which it is stated that LGBTQ individuals are to be treated with respect, compassion, and sensitivity. In context, the previous paragraph (No. 2357) states the Church’s moral position: Under no circumstances can (LGBTQ) activity be approved. It’s important to distinguish between the moral position, and the pastoral position. No. 2357 is the moral position, No. 2358 is the pastoral position. The book is primarily pastoral in nature.In the Bridge section, a chapter is devoted to each of the three virtues, respect, compassion, and sensitivity, from the perspective of both the LGBTQ community, and the Church. A bridge is not one-way, after all, as Fr. Martin observes. More importantly, showing these virtues to each other honors the Biblical doctrine of Imago Dei, and Jesus’ teaching to love your neighbor as yourself, and to love your enemy.Showing respect to the LGBTQ community involves recognition of existence, calling LGBTQ what they want to be called, and acknowledging their gifts and talents. Showing respect to the Church requires hearing (with the implication of obeying) the authoritative teaching of the church.Showing compassion to the LGBTQ community is comprised of listening to them, standing with them, sorrowing and rejoicing with them. Showing compassion to the Church means seeing Church leaders as God sees them, as anointed, though imperfect servants.Showing sensitivity to the LGBTQ community means being aware of their feelings, and being aware of what wounds them, then avoiding such language/action/attitudes. Showing sensitivity to the Church means using discrimination in the attachment of meaning to official pronouncements of the Church, in context.In a summary chapter entitled Together on the Bridge, Fr. Martin points out that the bridge is desirable for trust, forgiveness, reconciliation, unity and love, and that it is all supported by the power of the Holy Spirit. Implicit is the assumption that being together on the bridge, in Christian community, is a worthy goal.The Meditation and Reflection section contains 10 short meditations on key Scripture passages that Fr. Martin has found helpful in his ministry to the LGBTQ community. Among the ten are such things as the Biblical importance of naming for honoring all Imago Dei; finding acceptance in knowing that all of God’s children are “fearfully and wonderfully made”; finding strength in God (Psalm 62); finding hope in the risen Christ; and examining one’s “darkness” in the “sunshine of God’s love.” Each meditation concludes with questions for reflection, geared both to LGBTQ individuals, Church leaders, and allies.The final section contains a Prayer for use by the LGBTQ community, particularly when feeling the sting of rejection and despair.As mentioned earlier, Fr. Martin’s book is primarily pastoral in nature. Building A Bridge is not a book about who is right and who is wrong about homosexuality. Discernment police on either side of the debate will not find the book satisfying. However, the book is a valuable resource for bridging the divide, with plenty of completely Scriptural exhortation for both Church leaders, the LGBTQ community, and allies.Having said that, there are several moral implications, on both ends of the bridge, that each faction will have trouble with, respectively. Fr. Martin alludes to this in his Together on the Bridge summary: “Some of this may be hard for members of the LGBTQ community to hear. Some of this also may be challenging for Church leaders to hear.” If we are to meet in the middle, there are compromises that will need to be made by both sides.The first of these implicit compromises hinted at in the book is the moral issue, homosexuality as sin. This particular compromise will require more sacrifice on the part of the LGBTQ individual than for the Church. On the LGBTQ side of the bridge, it must be accepted that the Magisterium is unlikely to concede that homosexuality is not a sin, ever. The tradition and Biblical witness is too strong. This is implied in the section on Respect for the Church, as well as in the meditation about self-examination. On the other side of the bridge, the Church must avoid singling out homosexuality as a more “disordered” sin than, say, divorce and remarriage without annulment, premarital sex, adultery, even the use of birth control.The second compromise implicit in the book is the value and worth of all Catholics in God’s eyes. This compromise will require more sacrifice on the part of the Church than for the LGBTQ community. Fr. Martin advocates strongly for the acceptance of LGBTQ individuals in the Church community, up to and including lay service, and even comes close at points to affirmation that God has made LGBTQ individuals the way they are for a purpose. This is implied in the discussion about respect for the spiritual gifting of LGBTQ individuals, as well as in several of the meditations that relate to self-acceptance. On the other hand, he also advocates strongly for LGBTQ submission to and respect for Church leaders, tradition, and doctrine.This is a book directed specifically to a Catholic audience. It is worth pointing out that Catholic acceptance of LGBTQ as Christians hinges on their baptism/confirmation in the Church, not heterosexual identity. In the evangelical context, the vast majority of churches currently rejects LGBTQ Christians as a contradiction in terms. In other words, in most evangelical minds, it is not possible for someone who self-identifies as LGBTQ to also be a Christian. Although this is theologically erroneous from an orthodoxy point of view, it is nonetheless a reality that will unfortunately prevent most Evangelicals from finding any merit in the book.Overall the book is an excellent resource for those who have a passion for LGBTQ inclusion in the Church. The concepts could easily be adapted to other traditions, even the evangelical tradition. There may, of necessity, be limits to what that can look like in a Church, but there’s no Biblical warrant for complete exclusion of the LGBTQ community. Fr. Martin imparts a lot of Holy Spirit-filled wisdom about how to go about doing this. Contrary to his critics, I found the book to be thoroughly orthodox.From a personal standpoint, the approach advocated in the book is long overdue. I agree that there is value in being together on the bridge. Transformation happens in community, in relationship with other Christians, and with God. It is time for the Church to stop ostracizing specific groups of sinners. It is time for the Church to extend community to all. The best place for all sinners, including LGBTQ individuals, is in Christian community. I highly recommend the book for those who feel called to serve and be served in the LGBTQ context.

I read your book because many of my parishioners were curious as to why it was controversial. I can say honestly that this book is a good read and doesn’t nor you, deserve the negative publicity that it or you have received. Thanks for the wonderful questions and scriptural passages at the end of your book. These will come in handy.

This is not a good book for understanding where Catholics stand

Fr. Martin has written a book that truly brings Christ's love for all and is a wake up call for not only the church hierarchy and the LGBT community; but for each and every one of us in understanding and reaching out on both sides of the bridge. Not embracing Christ's examples to us of "love" of our neighbor (the second greatest commandment) makes us but empty shells of being Christians.
