Okay, so I have a confession to make. Up to the point of reading Jamie Sumner’s new book, I’ve taken for granted one of the most precious gifts God’s given me. Not once, not twice, but THREE times God blessed me with an easy peasy experience of getting pregnant, carrying to full-term, and delivering a healthy child into my world. Aside from some morning sickness and a scare with our second son who stopped breathing momentarily at 5-days-old because of reflux, my journey of baby making was simple. I even weathered three natural child births without the numbing stuff. (But I might have cussed like a sailor during one of them…)I’ve heard many stories and have prayed for countless mommas struggling with infertility, complications, miscarriages, etc. But not until I read Jamie’s book did I recognize how I’d barely scratched the surface of gratitude for my waltz into motherhood.Reading about Jamie’s path towards the birth of her first miracle, Charlie, unraveled me. What this dear woman endured is beyond comprehension for someone on the outside looking in. Yet, somehow Jamie weaved words with delicate precision to draw the reader into every gripping detail with beauty and grace.This book left me awestruck and inspired by Jamie’s courage and resolve in her pursuit of becoming a mom against inconceivable odds. She gives new meaning to spiritual surrender, which is not to say she didn’t battle with trust issues along the way. You’ll find her honesty refreshing as you come to realize she is just like the rest of us who, when facing overwhelming challenges, struggle to put one front in front of the other along our walk of faith.Adding to what is already a powerful and moving testimony by Jamie, is her brilliance in intertwining her circumstances with those of fearless Biblical women. Women who had to overcome what seemed like insurmountable situations. Every woman's journey into motherhood is different. Some women only need their husbands to look at them and they find themselves pregnant. Others pursue countless specialists in hopes of hearing the continuous fluttering of a little heart over the ultrasound. Some must hire lawyers and go in search of children they can call their own. Some are somewhere in between or a combination of them all. No matter what prompted your journey into motherhood, it's safe to assume that you had a plan or a vision of how you thought things would go. And it's safe to assume that probably only a few hours in, you quickly realized that life hardly ever goes according to plan.Jamie Sumner takes you through her awe inspiring journey into motherhood. Nothing went according to her plan, and yet through it all, God was faithful. She paints a realistic picture of the anguish and struggle infertility and loss can bring. She also reminds us of the unspeakable joy and peace that can come from completely surrendering to God in the best and worst of times. Jamie provides countless examples of women in the Bible who faced a range of situations and yet still clung to their faith and were made whole in the end, even if the end did not look exactly like they had planned. This book is filled with incredible truths that every mother should hear no matter what her journey and faith look like. What a special book! I’m glad I got the chance to read it and not only learn more about the author, but also receive reminders of strong women of the Bible. Jamie does a beautiful job chronicling her difficult journey to become a mother. Even in the times of desperate pain, she communicates what she went through with grace and humor. It's especially useful for Christian women, as she ties each of her chapters to a woman in the Bible. She illuminated her own story, their stories, and even my own with these adept comparisons. Highly recommended to all moms, especially those dealing with infertility or children who have medical issues.
Jamie shares about her tumultuous journey into motherhood with heart-wrenching honesty and beautiful story-telling. Her gripping writing made me grieve with her, celebrate with her, and engage God through all her peaks and valleys. It gave me a greater glimpse into the pain of infertility and the heartache of life-altering diagnoses, while also giving me a greater appreciation for the miracle and value of every life. I highly recommend this book!
Unbound tells a beautiful story of the challenges of infertility and the joys of becoming a mother under difficult circumstances.
