Disclaimers: I did buy the book from Amazon; I do not have any financial stake in the book; I am acquainted with the author. Like another reviewer, I was a little turned off by the title of this book. But, over the past few months, I have read it, a few pages at a time, and feel fully rewarded for my time and effort. The first half is an exposition of the IT organization of the future. It borrows heavily from other authors and didn't give me any new insights. However, the second half makes the point that to transform IT, we need to transform the people within IT. Or, if you are one of those people, you need to transform yourself. Mr. Araujo comes up with five new skills that IT managers must master: financial skills, critical thinking skills, communications and marketing skills, innovation and collaboration and leadership. These are the skills that, when added to your technical skills, will enable you to create the new IT organization. A great story that should be read and followed by all in IT. But, then I ask myself the question, why isn't this obvious? In baseball, if you want to get to the majors, you should try to be a five tool player. Having only one skill will make it much harder to achieve success. But in IT, I believe there is a certain arrogance associated with great technical skills; this sometimes may lead one to ignore the other skills. In business, there is no such luxury and business leaders will tend to have well rounded skill portfolios.I highly recommend this book for those with at least 3-5 years of technical work experience up to new CIO leaders.
An excellent read from a thought leader in IT Governance and transformation. The author has clearly worked in and around the IT field for quite awhile judging by the scenarios and insights scattered throughout this book. While it is a quick read, I discovered valuable ideas and sections that I will be coming back to reference for years to come.As an IT professional for almost 17 years and having worked for start-ups, consultancies, and multi-billion dollar corporations, I found the specific directions for mapping future IT careers and organizations of particular interest. Most "thought-provoking" books are light on specific knowledge to look into while most technical books ignore too much of the interdepartmental planning, coordination, and interfacing standards and controls needed for larger projects and initiatives to succeed (and the knowledge needed by individuals to succeed in those environments). The scenarios and suggestions would be just as useful in SMBs with some streamlining/simplification where needed, as well.Again, while it was a bit short, it was an engaging and interesting read with enough worthwhile information to justify adding to my professional library.
Mr. Araujo has glimpsed the future of enterprise IT - and the future is now!As a consultant, I read a lot on IT strategy, transformation and technology trends but no one comes close to Charles and the IT Transformation Institute. Therefore, I picked up this book with high expectations - and was not disappointed.Mr. Araujo is a wonderful writer with a talent for elucidating ideas and stimulating "ah-ha" moments. He speaks with the authority of someone who has spent decades in IT, yet clearly understands current trends and is able to cogently extrapolate into the future. Best of all, the book reads more like a novel than a book about IT; the pages just kept turning and I couldn't put it down. The book begins with a fascinating history of how the IT industry evolved into a staid, monolithic service provider model that was upended by the rise of Google, Apple's "i" products, and on-demand cloud services. In response, the modern IT organization, and the IT professional, have no choice but to radically change. Charles maps out a step-by-step approach for achieving this transformation, ending the book with a spirited call to action. If only all IT books were this timely, accurate and well-written. . .do yourself a favor and read this book.
Every IT Professional today should read this book. The author does a fantastic job of explaining how IT must make a paradigm shift in thinking in order to meet today's business needs and demands. Our Senior IT leadership team has purchased a copy of this book for our entire IT leadership team and we have formed a book club for team discussions. This book can transform your IT department!
I have been an IT professional for over 20 years and was trained to "build it to last" but reality is in today's business and IT world we need to be "building it to change." This book lays out that case for the shift, in both people and process and what it will take to transform to a continuously changing and learning person in the continuously changing and learning profession of IT.It is a powerful call to action and at times daunting and sobering in its revelations, but the author provides inspiring, believable and concrete guidance that prepares the willing reader for the forthcoming journey.I have already been discussing the tenets of this book with my peers and co-workers and socializing the valuable insights that Charles brings forth and have begun to work on some of the skills that will be critical for the new age.I highly recommend this book as a critical addition to any IT professional's library.
Surprisingly good book. Ignore the weird "New Age-y" title, it's a very practical book about specific trends in the industry and hot IT organizations and personnel need to respond to them.
A good read for those that want to understand where the world of IT is and is heading!!!
Students of Business and MIS programs should be required reading. CIOs, CEOs a must read and basis for indepth and intense dialogue internally between the business and IT.
