About the Author

Eugene H. Peterson (1932-2018) was a pastor, scholar, author, and poet. He wrote more than thirty books, including his widely acclaimed paraphrase of the Bible The Message: The Bible in Contemporary Language and bestselling spiritual formation classic A Long Obedience in the Same Direction. Peterson was founding pastor of Christ Our King Presbyterian Church in Bel Air, Maryland, where he served for twenty-nine years before retiring in 1991. With degrees from Seattle Pacific, New York Theological Seminary, and Johns Hopkins University, he served as professor of spiritual theology at Regent College in Vancouver, British Columbia, until retiring in 2006.

There’s much about Eugene Peterson’s work that gives me pause, namely “The Message" as he tried to put the Bible in contemporary jargon. Changing “give us this day our daily bread” to “keep us alive with three square meals” is not an improvement. I went into “Run With the Horses” with reservations to say the least. This book far exceeded my expectations, even if some of Peterson’s translation of the Bible underwhelm. Peterson understands Jeremiah and shows readers how his life and prophecies apply to the modern world. This is a fascinating and relatable book and Peterson is an engaging writer as he shows how following Jeremiah can offer a guide on on how to live life. There are some powerful lessons here and even those of us with reservations about some of Peterson’s work--including yours truly--will profit from reading this book. Highly recommended.

Eugene Peterson exceeded all my expectations with this book. Perhaps there is a bias here, in that Jeremiah is one of my favourite books. What "Run with the Horses" does, is that it makes what Jeremiah writes absolutely relevant to life in the world today, and forces you to confront the way you think about what "abundant life" really is and his analysis of the field of Anathoth sorted out for me, what had once been, a total enigma.Everyone will have their favourite revelation moment, but for me, his discussion on page132 of the weight that crowds carry and how true it is, that the more people, the less truth, and that integrity is never strengthened by multiplication.That holds true in every aspect of life. Just because "the Joneses" do something, doesn't mean it's right, or that we should follow suit to be "up with" them...This book will make you re-evaluate your ethics and your morality in a way that only Jeremiah could put it, through the modern analysis of one of today's most astute biblical scholars.

I'm 1/3 the way through this book. A normal, careful, read usually takes me a month or two (with generous notes/ideas/questions/research included). This one may take me 4-5 months. On pace to match, or exceed, Leap Over a Wall. Amazing, "stand-alone" sentences that can hold you for 20-30 minutes. Very readable, it's layers of thoughts remind me of C.S. Lewis in revelation of concepts, but much easier to understand on the first reading. Amazing insights - the fact that this book was written so many years ago, but speaks to our culture is a testament of Peterson's understanding of Scripture and culture.

If you struggle to make sense out of life, this book will help clarify things. The author uses the life of Jeremiah as a model of how to live an integrated, God-dependent life, in the midst of difficult and confusing circumstances. Very relevant to our present-day society though penned over thirty years ago. Referenced by Bono in his youtube interview with Eugene Peterson.

I am reading this book with a group seasoned business people. The world is getting more and more difficult. The unreasonably demand on speed and low cost production, cut throat competition and unfair practices are squeezing our desire and passion to stay in business. Pastor Pete reminded us to stay focus on and draw power from God who called all of us to remain and strive even for excellence in this pace. We are challenged to Run With The Horses by the Grace of God.

Both The Message Bible, a very modern American English translation, by Eugene Petersonand A Long Obedience in the Same Direction absolutely changed my life this summer. I really loved this book as well but I’m going to give it another go down the road. I almost always find something quite profound in every paragraph I read of his. In reading just those two books of his so far he really speaks to the reader about daily obedience of scripture but in a very alive and relational way with God the Father and not as some sort of silly legalistic rules. He’s very upfront that we will fail and doubt but we must continue on a daily routine in f repentance and seeking matter what. He helped to mature so quickly in such a short period of time that my mother was nothing short of astounded.

Read it 3 times and use as a devotional. Well written and easy to understand. Have made several recommendations. Jer12:5 is one of my favorite scriptures and I use it to develop perseverance when I go through tough times. What I realized in reading this book is that it's not just to endure challenges but it's a call or quest to live life at its best. Love it!

Run with the Horses was an engaging and encouraging look at the life of Jeremiah. Eugene Peterson did an excellent job of opening up the life of Jeremiah and exploring the major themes found there. Prior to reading this book my only exposure to Mr. Peterson was through the Message Bible. I was inspired to look into his other writings after watching his short video with Bono where they discussed the Psalms.

I can admit there are parts that aren't perfect. There is a bit much exposition, I guess. And maybe other details are a bit off. However, I love it with all my heart. All the details. It's just so thorough. Everytime I read this book (or watch the movie), I end up tearing up. Every single time. There is just so much to unpack. The last few chapters are worth the buildup for me. Completely worth it. I emotionally connect to Ellie so much that both when I saw the movie and read the book for the first time, I thought "There's no reason for me to cry this much. And I'm nothing like Ellie and nothing sad has happened. Except... oh... whoa... I need a minute. Where has this been all my life??? I'm not crying because I'm sad. This is new. I need to wait before trying to feel this again". This book fills me with wonder. It reminds me of all the good and bad parts about science. Plus, I am a sucker for discussions of religion and science and their overlapping magistra. I always expect to find flaws that ruin my experience of this book. I love it. I can't be bothered. When a book speaks to you, you just have to roll with it and maybe find a therapist at some point. I can't say this book will do the same for anyone else. It is dense. But I hope if you start, you finish. I love the whole ending. It has so much.

I had watched the movie version recently, so I thought to buy the book. The two are quite different in many respects. Sagan gets much more space to expound on his philosophy and put aside any thoughts that Matthew and Jodie are going to hook up. On the other hand you do get some idea of the rule book for scientific backbiting and seniors taking credit for the work of juniors; fortunately not as common as one might think.So was I disappointed in the movie after finally reading the book? No, movies are different than books. Both versions of Contact, in spite of their differences, are valid approaches to the same subject (with the movie inspired by the book, of course). My only beef as a scientist, and this applies to both versions of the story. My response to doubt is: let us take another ride and see if Jodie (or the group of 5 in the book) have the same experience. N=2 yields at least one-degree of freedom.

1) Plot (5 stars) - After spending a lifetime listening to the stars, one astronomer finally hears a message to build a machine. But should humanity build it? What will the machine do? Will it be friendly or hostile? The decision pulls all facets of our modern society to the table for a heated debate and the tension of their interplay and the final result was fascinating. Sometimes, however, I felt the pace was a bit slow.2) Characters (4 stars) - Ellie is the brilliant scientist charging forward for the cause of the rational, while sometimes missing the subtleties of interpersonal relations or emotions. She's a romantic which puts her at odds with her fellow scientists, but also deeply analytical which puts her at odds with much of humanity. On top of it, she's a female in a male dominated profession which allows for sexual and gender conflict as well. I enjoyed riding along with her on this journey.3) Theme (5 stars) - Are we alone in the universe? It's so immense that it seems almost mathematically impossible for us to be the only "intelligent" life form. But if so, why haven't we made contact? Is it a lack of technology on our side or theirs? A lack of interest? A time or space distance too large to hurdle? Or are we just too different to understand each other? This was the surface question of the book, but underlying it was the theme of faith vs. empirical rationality, and how we need both to dream and advance. A message which was summed up beautifully in the book's conclusion.4) Voice (4 stars) - Sagan became famous for translating esoteric scientific principles into simple and engaging parlance for non-scientists, and this ability shines through in his prose. Through Sagan's eyes all the prosaic backdrop we take for granted--ants, stars, mathematic concepts--come alive with his curiosity and the teeming science behind them.5) Setting (4 stars) - The book takes place in a variety of science facilities on Earth, and a bit in outer space. All were described well and I felt transported there.6) Overall (4 stars) - An excellent story on the role of science in our present and future, made accessible through a strong lead, interesting plot, and a kindly professorial voice. Smart and fun. I'd recommend it.

A very thought provoking book. It brings out the the eagerness of mankind in total, our long but not-in-vain search for some little evidence, that we do want/ have neighbors in this cosmos, somebody greater and even better than us but above all our feeling that we are not alone in this universe!I personally liked the war of words between the Science and Religion. It was factual and brought out the frustrations involved in both sides of the argument.

Engaging exploration of the interaction of science and religion, and ways they can converge and diverge. While some of the story's threads seemed at times to be distractions from the plot, they came together nicely in a final statement on beliefs, assumptions, and facts. Enjoyed listening to the Audible version; the narrator was excellent, especially for a story with a woman protagonist.

I was curious to read Carl Sagan's writing, and I was delighted to find a book that was original and from chapter to chapter, well organized and well written. And then, there is the question of the content - which I will not spoil for interested readers. Definitely worth reading!

For some reason I struggled getting through this. It just didn't move. I can't put my finger on any specific reason, Sagan is a great writer and top notch communicator. Ellie is a fantastic main character. Joss and the defense guy are a little two dimensional, as is her mentor. Oh, and Had on, the less said the better. I guess now I see why I had some trouble.

I enjoyed reading the book immensely. Carl Sagan pieced together many interesting concepts of space travel and possibilities. You need to go beyond the norm and beyond the accepted knowledge to make inroads to new knowledge. Whether the concepts can be real or not is not as important as using your brain to create it!
