Buck was unique, and he wasn't just some goofball that you saw on Hee Haw. Much of the Country influenced Rock of the late sixties, the seventies and the early eighties was written and performed by fans of Buck Owens. For my tastes, this is quite significant.Buck Owens was a serious musician and he forged a new direction for Country. In an era when Nashville was resorting to string sections and complex backing vocals Buck Owens played simple Country music but gave it a bit of a kick in the backside as far as tempo was concerned. Most of his music was upbeat and lively. They were fun songs sung in a manner that never took itself too seriously.Buck and Don Rich blended vocally like no other pairing that comes to mind. While they were technically excellent there was something about their voices that made them sound like a construction worker harmonizing with the mechanic at the service station. :) I don't mean that as a criticism, I like that aspect of their music. They were accessible to the average listener. Buck and the Buckaroos were like the band that played at a local bar, except that they were far better than average; a more polished version of real honky-tonk music.Reading Buck Owens thoughts made me appreciate his music all the more. He was a Classic tale of a Dust Bowl refugee that ended up moving west and, eventually, settling in California's Central Valley. His story could be considered the follow up to Grapes of Wrath . . . with a very happy ending.

Poe's book is a really good read for Buck Owens fans. If you've read Eileen Sisk's biography, Poe's book serves as a nice counterpoint, and maybe by reading the two books together Buck fans can get an idea of who the guy really was. Sisk painted a portrait of Buck as a man with extraordinary talent who achieved success in country music and business by climbing over the top of others. In short, he was a Sybaritic, egomaniacal, mean-spirited ass.Poe's book is written in Buck's own words and Buck paints himself as a musician with perfect pitch, a photographic memory, who hated the establishment in Nashville and achieved unparalleled success on his own terms through sheer hard work and determination. He admits to having made some mistakes and hurt some people, but, ah well, don't we all? And, in the end it was usually for their own good, he figures.I came away from the two books with the feeling that Buck's talent and genius at both business and country music were undeniable, but that he also had an unfortunate habit of white-washing his flaws. In short, a highly talented narcissist.

For those whose only familiarity with Buck Owens is the hayseed character (which he despised) that he portrayed on hit TV show "Hee Haw", this book will be a real eye opener. Even those who are aware that Buck Owens played many local and regional "dives" and one-night gigs will get more than their fill of detail of those days and his rise to stardom. It's all told in Buck's down-home "voice" as he actually recorded hundreds of cassettes, as the mood struck him over the years, in anticipation of one day writing an autobiography. Buck died before that could happened, but his tapes provided all the material - much of it verbatim - along with recollections from others whom he met, worked and played with, along the way. A truly enjoyable read that I hated to come to an end.

Book is well written. I learned many new insights about Buck, and some about Don, Tom, Doyle and Willy. Would like to have had more about Don, and some more photos of Buck's early years with Capitol (concerts, road scenes). I recommend the book to any fan of Buck and/or The Bakersfield Sound.

Buck was my idol in my early teens, just as he was hitting the airwaves with his hits on Capitol. I saw Buck perform many times in the '60's, two of which were at Springer's Ballroom in Gresham, OR. If anyone reading this was at those concerts please contact me! The book was hard to put down. As a fan, I knew Buck from records, radio, and concerts. So when I read his book, I could combine what I knew about Buck from a fan standpoint with the story told by the man himself. This rags to riches story, through a lot of hard work, is very inspiring. He also talks about his love life and how women, through his own actions, got him into some trouble. This is a side of Buck I never knew. It's refreshing to read about a talent who made it big in country music on the west coast, as opposed to in Nashville. If you are a fan of Buck and have any interest in how he made it big, this is a great read.

As a huge Buck/Don Rich fan, I enjoyed this very much. For a couple picture of the man I recommend you also read the Eileen Sisk book, although in some ways I kinda wish I hadn't. Buck seems to have been quite and A-hole!

What can I say other than amazing! This book was bought as a gift for my grandfather who has been a Buck Owens fan ever since buck began his musical career. He absolutely enjoys reading about bucks past and things that occurred in his lifetime. A great gift and read!

Bought this book for my husband as he loves to read autobiographies. He has finished it and has mentioned this book several times to me as he found this a fascinating read.

Sometimes writers get stuck in a rut when they're cranking out new stories. This book gives some excellent alternative ideas to breath new life into characters on a page. It's easy to cross-reference actions and come up with other methods to get your characters into gear and realistically moving/reacting.This makes an excellent reference for the actor, the screenwriter, and the novel author. Recommended!

Truly one of the most helpful books for screenwriters,directors and actors alike. It's well worth buying since it's a book you will have to reference over and over again. I also have found that the book is also just oddly helpful in changing the words I use in everyday life to better communicate.Good size book would fit in most medium to large purses easily fits in a backpack.Light weight. Decent font size.

A friend recommended this book when I was at the point in rehearsal where I had three lines that I just could NOT figure out what to do with. It's indispensable! Sometimes you just need the right nuanced verb to throw you into action.The verbs are categorized alphabetically and by emotional groups. This makes the book useful from the beginning-where I am getting a general idea of my characters' intentions, but need actions to play in rehearsal-all the way to the end when I am being very specific.I just flip through it every now and again, and the words stick. So when you're playing in rehearsal, new actions pop up in your head as options.The introduction was a nice refresher, too.

This is my absolute favorite resource as an off-Broadway actress. It has pages upon pages of actions for you to draw on. If you are struggling to find the right action during a scene, pick up this book and pick an action. The words in this thesaurus will push you to find the right purpose in your scene.
