In the latter part of the 20th century, the financial practices of school districts began to change. Specifically, some of these developments included: new accounting and budgeting rules along with stringent accountability demands, acknowledgment of the economic importance of education to people and society, which generated measures of effectiveness and efficiency from the national to the local level, legal directives from state legislatures and courts that placed new regulations on the distribution of educational money, and implementation of new standards for programs to prepare and license school administrators. Indeed, these and other changes opened the 21st century to a new and shifting perspective on the financing of public schools and new financial skills for school leaders. In response to these emerging rules, legal directives, standards, and other operating expectations, I developed a conceptual framework over a 12-year period while teaching a school finance course to aspiring school administrators. At the outset, I set a course parameter that future school administrators, as well as the professors who teach a school finance course, although needing a certain fluency with the process, could not be expected to become accountants. This book is a product of that work. AUTHOR'S CONCEPTUAL AND THEORETICAL FRAMEWORK Conceptual Framework. School finance, as presented in this book, is conceptually perceived and involves the following four interrelated components or features: The management structure that is unique to education and varies from setting to setting, such as the differences between small rural and large urban school districts. The programs, services, and activities of school districts that are both at the heart of education and assigned to school leaders located in the management structure. The financial budget plan prepared for the programs, services, and activities. The financial framework that houses the accounting and budgeting systems that, in turn, are used to administer the financial budget plan. To complete the circle, this financial framework must operate within the management structure and not outside of it. Theoretical Framework. With these interrelated components in mind, a basic premise for the book is that adequate financial resources for public education are tied to the economic vitality of the country and a community, and vice versa. To maximize the economic benefit gained from the scarce resources made available to a school district, school leaders must merge financial and strategic plans into one plan, which is referred to in this book as a strategic financial plan. School leaders must then administer the plan to achieve its intended ends. To attain the full potential offered by a strategic financial plan, school districts must incorporate site-based units into the process. Once strategic financial plans are developed and administered by all schools, programs, services, and activities within a district, the district will be able to strive to meet the financial needs at the operational level. In other words, the needs of the unit define the budget and not vice versa. Therefore, budget planning and management becomes the responsibility of site-based units and not the sole responsibility of a business office. To meet this expectation, school leaders must understand the accounting and budgeting systems and process, the financial framework mandated by the Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP), and the reports generated by the systems. ALIGNMENT WITH ACCREDITATION AND LICENSURE STANDARDS An important feature of this book is its alignment with accreditation standards set for programs in education administration by the National Council for the Accreditation of Teacher Education (NCATE) published in January 2002 by the National Policy Board for Educational Administration (NPBEA) and also the licensure standards of the Interstate School Leaders Licensure Consortium (ISLLC) in 1996. ISLLC appears in the margin each time there is a text reference to an ISLLC standard. In 1995, guidelines for the preparation of education administrators were published by the Educational Leadership Constituent Council (ELCC) for approval by NCATE. Then, in 2000, NCATE called for a new direction for graduate programs in education administration with an orientation based on how well graduates would be prepared to perform administrative functions in the workplace. In response to a request from NCATE, the NPBEA appointed a working group to integrate the ELCC Guidelines and the ISLLC Standards, to include doctoral level reviews, and to add the performance assessment component called for by NCATE. The revised standards for school building and school district leadership programs were submitted to NCATE in 2001 by the NPBEA and published in January 2002 (http://www.ncate.org/ retrieved on 2/17/03). The shift in the standards for collegiate programs is explained by the NPBEA (http://www.npbea.org/ retrieved 2/17/03) in their observation that "traditionally educational administration programs have focused on abstractions in an attempt to unify the field conceptually rather than examining the changing contexts and functions of educational leaders" (p. 3). The NPBEA continues, "Conditions require an outward looking, environmentally influenced vision of school leadership, moving away from the traditional inward looking, content dominated format. Defining the practice of leadership in contemporary school settings, identifying the knowledge and skills essential to effective practice, integrating theory and practice, and designing a quality accreditation process all reflect a useful direction for the field" (p. 3). Where appropriate, standards are cited in the book to connect them to the content. This connection shows the realism and legitimacy of the responsibilities and duties set forth in this book for administrators. TEXT OVERVIEW General Overview. This book is divided into three parts. The intent of the chapters in the first part is to explain why education and school finance are important and why current practices exist. The focus for the chapters in the second part is to describe what is contained in a strategic financial plan, the accounting and budgeting systems, and a financial framework. Finally, the third part examines how school leaders prepare and administer strategic financial plans. Part 1: Financing Public Education. These chapters provide a general foundation for the material presented in the following two sections. To accomplish this, these chapters include an introduction to major historical events associated with school finance; emerging developments, such as vouchers, charter schools, and open systems; special leadership considerations, such as policy making; the symbiotic and synergistic relationship between education and economics; and an overview and analysis of the major sources of revenue, including taxes. In addition, the evolution of educational equality in the United States is traced over time and through three primary focuses: access, treatment, and outcomes. The section concludes with an examination of the efforts of the courts and the federal and state governments to promote financial equity in public education. Part 2: Constructing a Strategic Financial Plan. First, the chapters in this section describe what is needed in a strategic plan: mission statements, goals, and objectives for the district with site-based goals, objectives, outcome, and output targets and benchmarks for programs, services, and activities. Then the strategic plan is broadened to become a strategic financial plan. Accounting funds are described and added to the organizational structure. The final two chapters in this section describe the accounting and budgeting systems that work within the financial framework. These chapters also include a discussion on the use of computers as well as the national set of account numbers for use by accounting and budgeting systems. Part 3: Preparing and Administering Site-Based and District Plans. The first three chapters in this section explain how to plan and administer the financial operations in the accounting funds restricted for instructional programs, the construction of facilities, and noninstructional operations. This includes the identification of revenue and income sources for each accounting fund, how to calculate property tax assessments, how bonds are sold, how debt is added to a property assessment to pay off debt, how to read and administer budget reports, how to manage personnel salaries through the accounting and budgeting systems, how to prepare business plans for income generating operations (such as food services), and how fiduciary accounts should be managed. The last chapter then addresses the call for accountability and how to generate cost measures for effectiveness and efficiency evaluations. SPECIAL FEATURES Resources Section. The resource section at the end of the book presents the set of accounting and budget numbers prepared by the National Center for Education Statistics (NCES). These numbers, which are explained in the text, are to be used by all state departments of education. In addition, the tables provide a reference for students when they become practitioners. Student Performance Exercises. Three types of exercises are offered to give students practical insights and experiences: Discussion Questions. At the end of each chapter, a set of questions is provided for stimulating thought-provoking discussions. Application Problems. At the end of selected chapters, problems are provided to allow students to apply the content of the chapter. These problems include the use of the resource tables for identifying budget categories (or vice versa), computing taxes, updating data from Web citations given in a chapter, vignettes, and so on. Clinical Field Practicum. From chapter 5 to chapter 12, a clinical field practicum for students is included at the end of each chapter. In this practicum, students collect information on the practices of a local school district and compare it to the content in the chapter. This set of exercises has been an extremely successful (and popular) part of my course as it offers numerous insights from practitioners for class discussions. Final Thoughts. At the end of each chapter, final thoughts are provided to add related content, raise issues and concerns, and serve as a transition to the following chapter. Glossary. Definitions for the finance, accounting, and budget terms used in the text are provided in a glossary at the end of the text. Web Citations. References to statistical data, professional standards, and other related material available on the Web are presented throughout the book with the Web addresses provided at the end of each chapter. References. At the end of each chapter, the cited references are provided. However, students are urged to go beyond these references and examine the broad literature base on school finance, as it is rich with theoretical and thought-provoking positions on the subject. Familiarity with the research and the views of leading educators in the field is career enhancing and will serve to make one a stronger administrator. Accounting Standards. Because the directives of the Governmental Accounting Standards Board (GASB) are followed by most states, they are used as the reference for presenting the Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP). Discussions of these principles and procedures do not require any prerequisite study in accounting.

I'm very disappointed with the physical quality of this book. The pages are very thin, almost like a newspaper, and they are literally falling out of the binding as I read the book. I was hoping to hold on to the book as a resource in my career, but I don't think it'll last very long if the pages are already falling out after the first read. This book is not worth the hefty price tag of over $100

needs major update the funding of schools has changed significantly over the last 10 years, the book mentions the upcoming changes but was written before the impact and implementation.

This book provides the details of public school funding. Unfortunately it does not address private school finance. The budgeting explanations were great!

Ok.

Informative read, came in good shape

Came quick and looked great!

This book was very useful for my class. It provides important information that is relative to the topic of school finance. The book is somewhat outdated with figures that are no longer useful, but the general information in the book is useful. Overall, it was a crucial purchase for my class and I learned a great deal by using the book.

Short chapters and easy to read - in this respect it is not like most college textbooks that I have read.Like most college textbooks though, you pay a lot for basic information that could be found for free on the internet.

I served with Leo in 3/75, never in the same platoon but I spent time with his sister platoon down the hall. Who knew us big dumb Rangers could spell words much less write so well??? Lest We Forget is a great read that never lulled in its pace of either action or humor and made it pretty tough to put it down. Here's to making sure history doesn't forget us! Cheers.RLTW

I write a lot of reviews and also write pulp fiction. Therefore, my reading interests cover a wide rangeof genres. Military history/stories being near the top.I especially have a spot for Special Forces Medics.Since I have worked Government contracts training18 D's, (SF Medics).Lest We Forget, brought back many memories, on alllevels...Great characters, fast moving storyline, will keep thereader's interest. Some stories are repeated, but that is par for the coursewhen it comes to SF medic types.I see you laughing over there. You know what I am talking about...Good read, well worth the time.

This text provided an over view of the nearly two years of medical training a medic in The Regiment receives. However, I was disappointed by the lack of stories or anecdotes about the author's experiences during his training. Those experiences are what make the Ranger medic what they are: medical professionals who "show the world... a highly trained soldier." The other sections of the book which discuss RIP/RASP and deployment down range illustrate very well the struggle to "uphold the prestige [&] honor...of the Rangers." The author does well to implant into the mind of the reader the often contradictory moral decisions and "intestinal fortitude required to fight on" in the asymmetrical warfare of which the Global War on Terror (GWOT) consists.

This book is a quick read and very straightforward. As a former Special Operations soldier myself, the thing that stood out the most for me was the theme of brotherhood. I laughed out loud as Leo recounted tales of debauchery and fun with his fellow warrior brothers. Leo has the ability to tell a story so that you can imagine yourself standing along side the characters. Leo talks quite a bit about the lighter side of being a Special Operations soldier, but he also does not shy away from the hard stuff. His descriptions of combat and deployments shed an incredible light into what Special Operations veterans have been doing in the past decade for our country. Great read, read it it in two nights.

I loved this book is an understatement! When I started reading i couldn't put this book down! Leo is funny and so "in your face" with honesty and forthrightness. You immediately want to meet him and spend a day listening to him (i was gonna say have a beer with him but I couldn't hang with him, lol). I was drawn to this book by several things. First, I'm an Army vet from way back in peacetime 1983. I had the privilege of meeting and working with the 2\75th Rangers at Ft Lewis Wa. I was a brand new Transportation 2d Lt (don't hold that against me). They were remarkable soldiers to say the least! As a civilian now I was able to get my EMT-B license through work a few years ago. So I loved reading about his education and how he applied it. Nothing prepares you or gives you the in depth training like the military does. I highly respect all of our active duty service men and women and veterans and wish we could do more for them! It would be an honor to be able to know and have a friend like L. Jenkins. My best years were in the Army. Get this book, read it, you won't be disappointed. You'll laugh and cry and sit in amazement!

Let me start out by saying no real life hero wears a cape, ate from a silver spoon, or walks a straight line. Nor are they perfect. But in today's war, men like Leo are perfect for the heroism (as some might refer to it as in this country) required to complete the missions set before them by this Nations leaders. The opportunity to have read some of his experiences, good & bad, without "sugar coating", was humbling & another reminder to never complain about what I have to do in this uniform. Many will cast there stones at him for the things he has said in this book but I can guarantee that they themselves are far from perfect & would never be able to face the dangers & risks that he & these men have placed themselves in to protect our great nation. It was apparent he never did it for the thank you's, handshakes, or respect but it is well deserved & goes without request. Thank you Leonidas Jenkins. I'll always respect you for the type of leader & soldier you we're, the epitome of a Ranger Medic. There aren't enough words to describe my gratitude for men such as yourself. Keep doing what you do because it's damn fine living & no one can take away the accomplishments you have conquered & will conquer in the years to come.

I thought that I had a good idea of the life of the soldiers at war. I spent many years as a war correspondent photographerin Vietnam, Laos. I even got airborne training from the Vietnamese army to be able to join them in their combat and laterwhen the US were fully committed I was a lot in the field. This book with the detailed description of the making of a Medicand later his activities so well written and so full of the human side of the life of Jenkins besides the war activities is an eye openerand increases my respect for the soldier in the field. The details and then comments in all the situations make this book easy to read and feel the action.Too many of us do not realize what the US soldiers goes through. Wake up and salute

This book is fantastic. A short read, but very interesting. I get bothered by typo's and so a star was knocked off. I don't mean bad grammar as in "he won't steeeeel a tracktor, he drujk". But there were a few typo's here and there that I noticed, which would have been fixed if ran through a simple grammar/spell checker. But it was great nonetheless, and a book I'll be picking up again to read.

The Difficulty of Being Good: On the Subtle Art of Dharma, by Gurcharan Das

Review

''The book is a wonderful combination of the scholarly and the personal, the academic and the meditative. The basic plan works beautifully, building a rich mix of his very, very careful and detailed reading of the text, his other wide reading, and his life in business; an extraordinary blend. I found the use of evolutionary biology and the Prisoner's Dilemma to explain the pragmatism of the Mahabharata absolutely brilliant.'' --Wendy Doniger, Mircea Eliade Professor of the History of Religions, University of Chicago ''The book is a remarkable tour de force that connects an ageless philosophical epic to the travails of contemporary society. This book is for the liberal Hindu who does not want his religion co-opted, for the modern Indian who wants to build a fair and inclusive society and for the global citizen who is rendered asunder by moral absolutism. The dharmic challenges we face every day resonate throughout Gurcharan's book. Reading this book has been an enriching experience!'' --Nandan Nilekani, author of Imagining India ''Through a series of bravura readings of the Mahabharata, Gurcharan Das makes a learned and passionate attempt to inform how the great Indian epic might illuminate our present-day moral dilemmas. Readers will find his analyses of dharma insightful, challenging, and honest--doing full justice to the world's most complex, exciting and honest poem. This admirable book offers precisely the kind of reflection that the epic itself invites--moral, political and public. It shows why the Mahabharata is a classic: because it is ever timely. This superb book is knowledgeable, passionate, and even courageous. Grounded in a secure knowledge of the narrative, it raises key moral problems--from the doctrine of just war to affirmative action to the nature of suffering--and it makes striking attempts to link these with contemporary discussions and issues, both public and personal.'' --Sheldon Pollock, William B. Ransford Professor of Sanskrit and Indian Studies, Columbia University''The book is a kind of miracle: a deeply sensitive man suddenly decides to leave his usual routines and familiar roles and to spend some years simply reading the Mahabharata and seeing what the ancient epic has to tell him; he engages profoundly with the text, with the bewildering profusion of its messages, its tormented heroes, and the dramatic events it describes; and he then finds the space and the right words for a thoughtful, highly personal, philosophically informed, skeptical, sustained response. Such things happen only rarely in our generation, and we should all be grateful to Gurcharan Das for this gift.'' --David Shulman, Renee Lang Professor of Humanistic Studies, Hebrew University''This book is a triple treat. It provides a subtle reading of episodes in the Mahabharata. It uses those readings to raise consistently provocative questions about the character of dharma. And it addresses important questions about the character of our ethical lives....It wears its learning lightly, prompting one to think, and hence it is a pleasure and a provocation.'' --Pratap Bhanu Mehta, political scientist and president, Centre for Policy Research, New Delhi ''This wise, passionate, and illuminating book is one of the best things I've read about the contribution of great literature to ethical thought.'' --Martha Nussbaum, Professor of Philosophy, University of Chicago''Gurcharan Das' personal search for dharma in the ancient epic uncovers buried signposts to a desirable future polity. The Difficulty of Being Good is a significant Indian contribution to a new, universal Enlightenment that is not Western in origin or character. It is a delight to read a book that wears its learning so elegantly and presents its arguments with such panache.'' --Sudhir Kakar, author and psychoanalyst ''It took me on a huge intellectual and emotional journey. And with Gurcharan Das as guide, even familiar paths seemed to lead through fresh landscapes....The secular humanism and intellectual humility that shines through this beautiful book shows that--along with everything else--the Mahabharata can provide just what the modern world needs. Das' rehabilitation of Yudhishthira is inspiring...showing convincingly that [others] misunderstand his role. I came away feeling more whole.'' --Dr. Ian Proudfoot, Sanskrit scholar, Australian National University "The Difficulty of Being Good represents an attempt by Das to bring together the two sides of his life, the literary and the practical. The result is a highly personal and idiosyncratic, yet richly insightful meditation on the application of ancient philosophy to issues of modern moral conduct and right and wrong."--William Dalrymple, The Financial Times

#494,737 in Books (See Top 100 in Books)

This book took me by storm. I purchased it at the suggestion of my cousin after we were having a spiritual conversation that first started on What's App. I have spent every spare moment I have reading this book. As a Hindu Indian who has been born and raised in the US I loved the references to Greek mythology and the Western philosophers as we spend a lot of time studying this in school. I have always thought that there are many parallels between Greek mythology and the epics of the Hindu religion. I appreciated how Mr. Das compared and contrasted them. While I was reading the book I couldn't help but see the parallels to what is happening right now in the US during our election year. The Mahabharata is playing out right here in front of me. I couldn't help but slot current politicians into the various characters in the Mahabharata. And once I started down that road, you can analyze almost any situation we are facing today - terrorism, corporate greed, personal family situations, etc. along the lines of the Mahabharata and of course the Mahabharata that plays out inside of us individually. I could relate to each character - I've experienced each one of those traits - envy, courage, revenge, the unevenness of dharma, etc. I could go on. I especially appreciated how he used examples that are in current times that I could relate to whether it was his own personal experiences, the Ambani brothers, or the Financial Crisis of 2008.I especially appreciated this commentary on how there is very little remorse today. We need more people like Yudhishthira to actually feel remorse when they've done wrong. As he rightly mentions there was no remorse after the 2008 Financial crisis or the many other things that play out in the global arena. Our leaders whether political, corporate, or religious have lost sight of their dharma. If I could offer a few suggestions to improve the book it would be that there were some things that were repeated quite often. Perhaps this was for the readers who have no information about the Mahabharata and that's why he continued to repeat many of the facts, I don't know. The other suggestion I have is that he very briefly touches on the fact had the Pandavas always followed dharma and not fought the war or had fought fairly they would have most probably have lost and that perhaps being dharmic means you lose in the world that we live in. I would have liked to hear more about this because it makes me question is it really possible to follow dharma and succeed in the world we live in? Or do you really have to choose between succeeding in the material world or succeeding with your higher being. He also briefly speaks about but perhaps this was destined because Krishna wanted to kill off the kshastrias because they as a group had too much pride, ego, etc. In which case is the demise of the kshastria class a result of their collective karma.I really loved the book - but I would love to see a sequel that expands on some of the issues that Mr. Das did not dive deep on. The book definitely made me think of a variety of things going on the world as well as my own personal life. I would highly recommend this book to anyone!!And lastly, as Mr. Das mentions early in the book why isn't the Mahabharata read more, analyzed more and studied throughout the world? This is an epic that merits more attention and we need more people like Mr. Das to bring our great epics and literature to a global stage.

This is one of the rare books that rekindles the joy of reading in its patrons, especially those who are familiar with the substratum of Das's book - the Mahabharata. When the Mahabharata was telecast in India in the 1980s, one of the lines in its title song was 'seekh hum beete yugon se naye yug ka kare swaagat,' or 'let us learn from past eras to inform (improve) our actions in our current time.' In a refreshing contrast to the litany of books and TV serials on the Mahabharata that simply regurgitate its content for a younger set of consumers, Das's book - like Iravati Karve's 'Yugaanta' - follows through on the suggestion above; it analyzes the conduct of the epic's protagonists, celebrates deeds undertaken with a spirit of sacrifice, passes judgment on actions motivated by greed/ envy and during this process, seeks to discover elusive life-lessons that are hinted at by the epic's author (Vyasa). As an ex-CEO of P&G India and a historian of contemporary India ('India Unbound' was very beneficial to me during my CAT preparations), Das is in a unique position of relating these lessons to corporate and political battles being staged in modern India (and around the world), which he does so admirably. His quotes from past philosophers, Greek mythology and his personal experience growing up in Shimla and as a student at Harvard/ University of Chicago in relation to events described in the Mahabharata make the book all the more informative. I found Das's insights on the flaws of capitalism and socialism as well as his view on the differences in the writing styles of Greek and Indian myths to be particularly interesting. In summary, Das's book is a welcome change from standard prose menu available to readers - entertaining fictions, prosaic histories and self-evident self-help books. Das's book forces its readers to think of the consequences of their actions from a personal as well as a societal perspective.I would have preferred the use of the critical edition of the Mahabharata as the basis for the book instead of the English translations that were actually chosen. The critical edition omits several passages that are found in the traditional version and the abridged text offers better insights into the conduct of the Mahabharata's protagonists. For example, Das writes about Karna instigating the disrobing of Draupadi (this seems to be payback for his rejection at Draupadi's Svayamvara), but the critical edition removes Karna from the Svayamvara altogether. The critical edition is consistent with Karna's statement to Krishna that Karna's sons were married to Suta women (Vidura was married to a Suta princess as well), so Karna would never have been eligible for Draupadi's hand in the first place. This means Karna's action at the game of dice was representative of realpolitik or the 'law of the jungle (Matsya-Nyaya)' - i.e., given an opportunity, the strong prey upon those who are vulnerable. This axiom is repeated time and again in Das's book - 'whether by virtuous means or not, a Kshatriya's duty is to prevail' and 'life presents itself in a way in which the least experienced (weakest) player is nevertheless pushed to the point of staking everything he has in the end (against the strong), with the certainty of losing.' This also robs Karna of the rich reputation that Das accords to him (that 'Karna's life reminds us that true Dharma is truth, commitment, generosity and friendship'). In the epic, Karna is vicious to the Pandavas, Draupadi and Abhimanyu (when they are helpless) and extremely rash in discharging his duty as Duryodhana's friend and commander-in-chief (he promises Kunti that he will not kill four Pandava brothers and lets Yudhishthira go on the 17th day of battle when Yudhishthira's capture could have ended the war).In an epic that defines Dharma as 'one should never do to another what one regards as injurious to oneself (i.e., compassion). This is the law of Dharma,' it is quite ironic to find every single protagonist (with the exception of Yudhishthira who was in an impossible predicament) following realpolitik when it suited their interest. We can go through the list - Bhishma rejects Amba's pleas and takes her away by force/ weds Gandhari to a blind king without her approval, Drona demands Ekalayva's thumb to maintain Arjuna's superiority (and Arjuna assents to this), Bhima publicly shames Karna in the tournament of Kuru princes, Karna publicly shames the Pandavas and Draupadi in the game of dice, Krishna and Arjuna slaughter the unarmed and innocent inhabitants of the Khandava forest, Duryodhana orders the killing of the unarmed Abhimanyu - the list goes on. The actions of the epic's protagonists (including Krishna's) are at violent variance with the lofty definition of Dharma as compassion (as Das's book concludes), leading one to suspect that the Mahabharata was never intended to be a manual of Dharma in the first place. Indeed, India has another set of books called the Dharmashastras that debate the theory and practice of Dharma, and the Mahabharata is not included in this set. The Mahabharata is a book on Karma-yoga - it exhorts one to act according to one's Dharma (which is the teaching of the Gita), which in turn is decided by one's Varna. Vidura clearly explains the Dharma of each Varna to Dhritarashtra in the Udyoga Parva and compassion is not listed as an attribute of any Varna. The virtues of following one's Dharma as per one's Varna is a place in heaven, which is the culmination of the epic. There is no place for Moksha (liberation) in this worldview.I would go with Devdutt Pattanaik's interpretation of the message of the Mahabharata - he has pointed out that the original epic was called Jaya (8,800 verses) and was much smaller than the Mahabharata (24,000 verses). As per Pattanaik, Jaya was a story of conquering one's internal enemies (e.g., anger, envy, greed, hatred, animosity), which is illustrated by Yudhishthira's experience in heaven. Aghast at seeing Duryodhana in heaven and his brothers in hell, Yudhishthira laments that he would rather spend the rest of his days in hell. Indra calmly asks him why he still harbors such spite against the Kauravas when he was victorious in battle against the Kurus, had slain all his enemies and had ruled over the Kuru kingdom for 36 years. If this wasn't victory (vijaya), then what more would satisfy Yudhishthira? Yudhishthira finally realizes that real victory (Jaya) is not over external enemies but over one's own desire for things to be a certain way. When Yudhishthira lets this desire go, he is finally at peace. The concept of Dharma as compassion is redolent of Buddhist philosophy. The Buddha has said that once one's mind is cleansed of all samskraras (impressions that produce desires), then one is left with compassion for all. The entire corpus of Jataka tales revolves around the theme of compassion (culminating in the Bodhisattva incarnating as Gautama). The concept of Moksha is introduced in the Shanti Parva of the Mahabharata, which is not a part of the critical edition. Compassion as Dharma would lead to Moksha, which is an ideal of Jnana-yoga/ Buddhism and not the Karma-yoga of the Mahabharata. The reason for Jnana Yoga/ Buddhism being more relevant than Karma Yoga in later renditions of the Mahabharata is the subject of another essay.Lastly, there is a factual error on page 219 - Drupada was killed by Drona on the 15th night (Ashwatthama did not kill Drupada on the 18th night). Das should have said Shikhandi in this passage.

I have read at least 4 different versions of Mahabharata & every time I had finished with unresolved questions. I used to have questions specially around Krishna, Karna & Bhishma. This book has helped answer a lot of those questions. Just to give an e.g. I used to always wonder why did Bhishma, a great warrior remain a mute witness to what happened with Draupadi after the dice game. This books sheds a lot of light on that event. If anyone wants to really "understand" Mahabharata, this is the book for you. Go for it!!

I suppose I misread what this book was truly about. I really tried to get into it, but just couldn't. It will be shared with someone else.

This is a great book about a complex subject, written in a readable style. He makes the reader asks the important questions of life and puts them in the framework of the Mahabharata.... enjoyable reading. I also bought a hard copy of the book as it's the kind of book you would want to refer to and leaf back and forth from beginning to middle to end, to remember the characters and so forth.

This is a book worth reading in these times when the line between good and bad has become more obscured than ever. Gurcharan Das has not only succeeded in bringing an old epic story of the east into a contemporary global context, but in the process has also written a thought provoking treatise on ethical/moral/psychological issues confronting the modern man. At places in the book I wished that the discussion woud get deeper into philosophical and psychological dimensions rather than political/current events perspectives, but that is a personal preference. I would highly recommend this book to any one interested in how an ancient story can reveal the stubborn-ness of human conflict.

The examples and blurblettes are so inspiring, it really got me started doing car design! It's not so much informative as it is inspiring, but if you study each example, and use the designer's notes as inspiration to keep you going, you can begin to abstract the basics of car design. Passion helps - there is virtually no "instruction," as I recall.

Wonderful book for my son who loves to study and draw cars!

This was a gift for my 14 year old grandson who wants to become an automotive engineer. He really liked it and keeps looking at it though he has read it.

The worst book i have ever bought. Even a simple car magazine gives more inspiration for car design. It's a real piece of crap. Waste of money and paper.

gave as gift to a 14 years old and his expression made it for me.

A very wide ranging book that both provides a lot of information on the design process in the industry. And it also gives a good picture of the design process and the love that the people involved have for cars.

Great Book with many pictures and writings. i like that it has the demo of drawing cars.sad that peter schreyer's works description is very limited in the book

This book is incredible...it has tons of pictures, helpful tips about sketching, many interviews with top designers, and has ideas to think about when designing. The title doesn't lie; this book really is the key to design cars like a pro!

Review

"This book can be called a practical introduction to atomic force microscopy (AFM). It is outstanding among those written on this subject. I have worked with AFM starting from the year of its invention, and have seen books written quite formally. This book is written by true experts with a deep knowledge of the AFM technique" "This is structured as a sort of "super manual." I wish I had such a useful text when learning this technique." - Prof. Igor Sokolov, in MRS Bulletin

A super-clear, easy-to-read, informative, and intuitive introduction to AFM, the best I have found. Normally, I find that books like this can be a bit dense and/or skip over details of how things work, but this book builds everything up intuitively and with such clarity it'd probably be able to be understood by a freshman college student--but, without sacrificing the necessary detail.

I bought 6 books from this collection for my 3 yr old son. He likes books in general but I enjoyed option of Russian and English. Now his grandparents read to him in Russian and my older niece in English. Paper quality is good, pictures and colors are bright. Books are thin (I bought paper copy) - which is positive and negative: easy to carry anywhere you go but at the same time I feel they would wear out quickly. Also feel that price of almost $10 per book is high Overall great product!

This book is an excellent way to introduce a child to either Russian or English, or even if you are an adult. There are many vocabulary words embedded in this charming, engaging story.

my kid love this book. and i bought every one of them that is sold here . wish there were more books in Russian sold on amazon.

It's a fun book to read.

So not worth it.
