I came across this book when searching for Ole Rolvaag's "Giants in the Earth" I wanted to learn more about my Norwegian ancestor's lives. My 3rd Gr. Grandfather's came from Norway and Sweden and homesteaded not far from the Ullberg family, across the Missouri river in Nebraska. I have always been interested in learning about how they came here and how they survived without today's modern conveniences. Like Mr. Hofer stated: (Ole) was representative of a tough breed people who were willing to work, suffer, and accept challenges in their quest to realize the promise of America for themselves and their families. " I know there were a few differences that Ole's family and my family faced. The land on the South Dakota side is very flat and they had to build "sod" houses. The land on the Nebraska side is very hilly and my family lived in dug outs for many years. The dug outs still exist and when I first saw them as a child, and still see them as an adult, I am fascinated that they were able to endure that and the other hardships. But, they were very resilient people, they had to be. I'm so glad that I found this book. I'd recommend it for all ages. I am now starting to read another one of Verlyn Hofer's books, "The Maverick Hutterite"
If you love Little House on the Prairie, You will love this book. Verlyn Hofer is a gifted writer that has combined the oral history handed down to him by his mother and grandfather with extensive public record research to produce a beautiful book. Once you begin reading this book, you will find it hard to put down. You will love Ole!
Great story of the journey of a family - particularly following a boy named Ole - as they travel from Norway to America by sea and land. The family homesteads Dakota Territory and face unbelievable challenges and hardships along the way. I HIGHLY RECOMMEND this book to anyone interested in history, as this is truly a chronicle of America's development. The author is a life-long resident of South Dakota and is the actual grandson of the "Ole" from the title of the book. I hope you enjoy this book as much as I did!
