An outstanding contribution to the history of the Vietnam War and an excellent tribute to the men who fought the “secret war†that virtually no one knew about, including most to the American political and military leadership. The release of this first volume, with its concentration on Operation Tailwind, is perfectly timed: on the 23rd of this month (October) Gary Mike Rose, the medic on Operation Tailwind, will receive the Medal of Honor for his unbelievably heroic actions over the course of the four-day running battle. Meyer gives a gripping account of the chaos of battle and of a level heroism that borders on the unbelievable. But it’s all true! I look forward to future in-depth, first-hand chronicles of SOG warriors and those who supported them, along with more current stories about the brave men who continue that tradition today.
While the story of the SOG mission is an important one, the author used too much repetition of a lot of phrases describing the mission. "Operation Tailwind launched into Laos to take the pressure off the ICE mission on the plains..." was over used. Also the nomenclature of the aircraft and their unit designations were over used. " Rescue helicopter " would have sufficed. Each chapter started with a synopsis of the previous chapter which I had just read! It seemed the author was trying to "fill " the book with repetitive words. I would get tired of reading the book and found that I to "start" reading the book several times in order to finish.Perhaps the author could have included several missions in the book in order to create a book and not a novela. While it was difficult for me to get through the book, the story of the Green Berets in the SOG organization and in this mission, is an honorable one. In the Vietnam war they were the cream of the crop. They had tremendous stamina, tenacity, training, skill and courage. They were true heros.
For anyone who has watched the Ken Burns Vietnam War documentary and wants to hear the special forces/Green Beret/MACV-SOG side of the story from those who were on the ground, this book and John Stryker Meyer's other two books ("Across the Fence" and "On the Ground") will definitely give you a greater appreciation for what it was like for these elite warriors on their secret missions. In this edition of SOG Chronicles, I personally enjoyed learning about the CIA's involvement in Operation Tailwind, and I loved learning more about Ben Baker — the SOG version of James Bond's M. Very cool. Looking forward to future installments!
In this initial volume Meyer focuses on one of the most dramatic operations of Vietnam or any other war: Operation Tailwind. While I was familiar with aspects of Tailwind this is the first time the entire package has been recounted in detail from inception and execution to slander and libel by CNN decades later. Some reviewers have criticized Meyer for including the CNN portion or for poor editing. I agree that every author (including me) benefits from good editing, "Chronicles" is not as bad as one reviewer commented. Certainly the content was important enough to read through small glitches. This book belongs in every library on contemporary military history particularly for those interested in Studies and Observation Group and Vietnam.Get a copy, you'll enjoy the drama and appreciate the bravery and audacity of the men who carried it out splendidly.
An excellent read. The Green Berets and the pilots who supported them across the fence must have had a special tailor to adjust there trousers because they were all carrying around big giant brass ones.A good account of the heroic who carried out some nasty missions beyond the call in my opinion.I first read of these with Lynne M. Black's book "WTF" which I would recomend to anyone interested in the subject of SOG or Vietnam. There i came across Mr. Meyer's name and have read his books along with " The Dying Place" and a very short piece on Robert Howard who had more medals than Audie Murphy. But who knew? It was all secret.I have a brother who did a tour with MACV but he will never talk about it like he will never talk about Hue during the Tet offensive. ( He was there though not a marine or in the 101st). So i read things like this to get an idea of his two tours. Thanks to the author for making some info avaiable.
Behind enemy lines operation run by warriors that were as dedicated as anyone could ask for. The book is a good introduction of the type of special operations performed by dedicated specials forces soldiers, this book should be made into a film because even the film industry could not have come up with a tale to match the valor of these soldiers and it is all real! The follow up CNN snafu is a tale that needs to be examine by anyone interested in how the this tale of valor was almost turned into a tale of disgrace if not for the continued valor of the soldiers that lived this story.
Very good book on Operation Tailwind, a MACV-SOG operation deep in Laos to draw the North Vietnamese Army from the Plain of Jars, where the CIA-led Laotian forces were battling the NVA. Well written, about this successful operation against a determined enemy. John Stryker Myer is an excellent author and authority on MACV-SOG operations having served as a 1-0 Team Leader on MACV-SOG teams who went "over the fence" into Laos, Cambodia, and North Vietnam. I highly recommend this book, as well as John Stryker Myers other books.
