The concept of this game gets top marks. You play the children of the gods of various world mythologies in the modern world, but unknowingly because the gods have been mingling among humans in secret these past centuries. So surprise! That deadbeat dad who left your mom? Turns out he was actually Thor. Or you always thought your mom left you in an orphanage because she was a drug addict? Well, no it turns out she was the Egyptian cat goddess Bastet. Family is complicated and you're a demigod. This gets more fun when you end up chased down and beaten up by biker gangs being manipulated by one of the kids of your Uncle Loki who thinks roughing you up will teach you a lesson, or the son of Susano-O decides to throw a skinned horse through the window of the restaurant you work at because of a perceived slight.Add to that that the whole reason you even know about your godly bloodline is because your folks all had to go to war against the titans again and have had to leave the world in the care of the next generation--you guys. And oh, by the way, horrible monsters called titanspawn are going to frequently tear free of that divine war and show up on earth to conduct acts of terror. And who gets to stop them when that happens? Well you and any demigods you know who don't hate your guts.So there's lots of drama in this setting, which is a hallmark of White Wolf/Obsidian Path products. Like a lot of their products, they also do enough research to really feel like they know what they're talking about (until you start doing your own research and figure out just how little they know what they're talking about). But the book is pretty and the concepts are engaging, and it's a fun game to play as long as you're okay heavily adding on to it and rewriting stuff to make it work. The downsides aren't many, but they're frustrating and really hurt the finished product. The powers you get for being a demigod are frankly pretty terrible. You can make your hand glow like a flashlight. You can cause small plants to grow. Even at the very top end, if you buy any of these powers all the way to the top, most of them are still pretty terrible. There's a few that are insanely broken compared to the rest (though frankly that puts them about where you'd want powers for your godling character to be) like the one where you make a holy symbol of truthfulness and the person you're talking to just believes your story about whatever you're telling him unless people sit him down and line up the evidence. This is a pretty good one. Most of them just aren't. You end up feeling pretty weak--and it doesn't get any better. Apparently there's two other books in this series that give you better stuff. I haven't seen them, but you may want to check them out and see about yoinking the powers from one of those maybe.Another big problem is how the titanspawn are handled. I like the idea that maybe there's minotaurs in the cornfields on the outskirts of town, dragging off drunk cowboys from the local bar, knocking them unconscious to wake up in an improvised corn maze to try and escape. That kind of monster of the week is fun. But Scion takes the approach that titanspawn are largely retreaded to look and act like modern tropes--so you get hideous things like centaurs with engine blocks growing out of their ribcage and exhaust pipes for wings--because people used to ride horses, but now they ride motorcycles...get it? You get fire giants in trenchcoats and dwarves in flannel shirts and mining hardhats. Some of it is pretty cringeworthy. Medusas that bite girls with their hair snakes and turn them into lethal barflies that get you out into an alley and turn you to stone...that's actually a little cool.So yeah, lots of concept and a solid game but lots of implimentation and mechanics you'd be better off coming up with by yourself. Take it for what it's worth--you can have a lot of fun with it. A lot of the thinking behind it is kind of cheesy and the decisions the mechanics are pretty underwhelming, but if none of that ends up bothering you, you can end up with a really fun game.

This book is great.Introduces a new branch in RPG's playing as the son (or daughter) of an ancient good and developing his/her legend.Receive power and mystical gifts such as enchanted swords or powerful cellphones or cars (you can). The game system is easy to use and the preset adventure (characters for beginning players included) is great. The Fatebinding mechanic is nice and represents an endless canvas of possibilities for story-telling and of course, fun.The combat system is the flaw. It is boring, not dynamic and slow. All your adventure can be fast and exiting, but when you get into fights the game turns into a nightmare. For GM and players. Some things are not explained or included in the book such as the jaguar warriors the game mentions you can have as followers but when you look for them in the book, surprise!, There are none. So you have to talk to your GM to make adjustments and balance things and improvise (which in my opinion is good most of the time for storytelling, but not for mechanics and not for a core book).I recommend this book if you can take the time improve (or create a new one) the combat system (based on other games from White-Wolf) it will give you hours of fun and legend. And skip the centaurs presented in this book, that was not a good idea at all. Keep the original concept and things will be better.

I like the game so making sure I have the core rule books is kinda important right? Yes it is! Well anyway, the premise of the game is that you're child of one of the gods from an ancient pantheon. It's a blast and you should try it.

Good RPG using the white wolf system! Its a great system if you Story tell in a loose and fun fashion! If you like modern fantasy and the ancient gods you'll love to play/run this game!If your interested out play groups podcasting a Aesir saving the world game:http://ragnarokandroll.podbean.com/Jim

If you enjoy the WOD series this is a great addition especially if you like any history mythos. Easy to start and you dont have to be familiar with WOD to play as the book describes in detail how everything works from combat to getting around.

Scion hero is a great rpg, you can play it in almost any period of time with great possibilities of epic encounters and events that could change the fate of the whole world. The rules are simple and straitgh foward, even tough a very few of them lack some more deep explanation, like the necessity of touch in the Heal power. Even tough those minor details don't hurt the game. Another master piece from White-Wolf

It's a wonderful game and it's so hard to find that being able to order it online was a real treat. This is the first book of three corebooks (and a few companion books), so it's got all you need in order to be able to run an adventure. That includes character creation for your players and a pre-built adventure and characters for the GM if you're just starting out and don't want to make your own. It uses the same tick system that other White Wolf games use and generally I found it to be a well balanced game. Plus, who doesn't love a bit of mythology? On a note for the seller, it came in a timely manner and as described.

Being I love mythology this game is the best. This history and all the detail put in to the game makes you feel as if you are playing in a tv show. You can get alot out of this game when you know some mythology and studying it because when you bring it to the game you can feel the history of your god/parent.

Living the Secular Life: New Answers to Old Questions, by Phil Zuckerman

Review

Susan Jacoby, New York Times Book Review: “An insightful mixture of academic research on shifting American religious views, his own experience as a parent, and interviews with others facing moral crises without God… this book is a humane and sensible guide to and for the many kinds of Americans leading secular lives.” A Best Book of 2014, Publishers Weekly:  "Zuckerman is a sociologist who in this groundbreaking book writes clearly, offers unobtrusive statistical support, and provides a persuasive and comprehensive look at the growing contemporary phenomenon of people who choose to live without religion, but with ethics and meaning in their lives."David Brooks, The New York Times"As secularism becomes more prominent and self-confident, its spokesmen have more insistently argued that secularism should not be seen as an absence — as a lack of faith — but rather as a positive moral creed. Phil Zuckerman, a Pitzer College sociologist, makes this case as fluidly and pleasurably as anybody in his book, Living the Secular Life." Publishers Weekly:  "In this fascinating work, Zuckerman (Faith No More: Why People Reject Religion), professor of sociology and secular studies at Pitzer College, explores the moral and ethical foundations of secularism, addressing the question of whether you can live a good life without God or religion. Anecdotal evidence abounds; interviews with former religious adherents who have moved into secularism, both within and outside their religious communities, offer a compelling argument for the non-necessity of God in the pursuit of a moral life. " Booklist:  "With recent polls reporting 30 percent of Americans are nonreligious, while other studies find atheists the least-trusted people in the country, isn’t it high time to blow away the myths about the nonreligious? Answering affirmatively, the sociologist founder of the first secular-studies program at Pitzer College presents real secular people as peaceable, productive, and living happily….He also shows that secularism isn’t bipolar—believer or nonbeliever—but includes many with some supernatural beliefs but who aren’t religiously observant. And there’s not a proselytizer or zealot among this group—the point being that secular people are not all—indeed, hardly ever—Christopher Hitchens or Madalyn Murray O’Hair. May one more prejudice fall."  Library Journal:  “The author brilliantly weaves stories and reflections together with empirical sociological research to create a rich portrait of secular America….Highly recommended for all readers, both religious and nonreligious, seeking a more accurate understanding of this ever-growing segment of the American population.” Greg M. Epstein, humanist chaplain at Harvard University; author Good Without God “Phil Zuckerman is without a doubt the leading American sociologist of secularism. And with America secularizing more rapidly and profoundly now than in any previous era in our history, Zuckerman’s work has become essential reading for everyday people who want to understand religion—and the nonreligious—in this country. Living the Secular Life represents the next big chapter in a centuries-old story, so if you’ve ever taken an interest in Dawkins, Harris, Hitchens, et al., you certainly need to pick this book up and find out where things are headed.” Bart Campolo, author Things We Wish We Had Said “Since coming out as a post-Christian minister, I’ve discovered all kinds of people sincerely pursuing goodness without the nurture, encouragement, and mutual support most church folks take for granted. These folks are hungry for fellowship and pastoral care, but even hungrier for a thoughtful, positive way to communicate their values and commitments to friends and family members instinctively distrustful of anyone who doesn’t believe in God. For them—and for me—Phil Zuckerman is a genuine hero, and Living the Secular Life is a wonderful gift. Here at last is a clear, concise, and compassionate guided tour of the world’s fastest-growing way of life. Zuckerman isn’t trying to prove everyone else wrong. On the contrary, he’s helping the secular community better understand and comport itself, and helping the rest of humanity understand that we’re on their side too.” Peter Boghossian, professor of philosophy, Portland State University; author of A Manual for Creating Atheists “For secular people seeking deeper insight into their own worldview, or religious people seeking to better understand the rise of irreligion in society today, this book is indispensable. An engaging, powerful read.”

This was a fairly quick read. I've read Phil's other two books and thought they brought up some points that True Believers should consider, though I have doubts that they would really change the mind of any evangelical.I enjoyed the book, and I'm certainly glad that Zuckerman wrote it. I'm glad he cited the anecdotes of unbelievers being harassed and discriminated against, especially those secularists who have the misfortune of living in the Bible Belt. Christians are told by Jesus to "love your enemies," but all too many of them see unbelievers as spawn of the devil, to be hated and told we will all go to hell. I think all of us secularists are aware of the low opinion the Christian majority in America have of us, but it's still disheartening to me to read that they would never even consider voting for an atheist or avowed unbeliever for any public office. After all, there's not supposed to be a "religious test" to hold public office in our country. And I'm glad he brought up the point about the "under God" clause in the Pledge of Allegiance, because many Americans blindly believe it was always that way, but it was simply added in 1954.There's a lot of anecdotes in this book. It wasn't written as an academic exercise, or a philosophical treatise, so don't expect it to be, nor should you attack it because it isn't. We need books like this from Zuckerman, if only, as he describes it, to give "backbone" to the secularists who are a growing number in America, so I think he realizes that he's largely "preaching to the choir." I'm not crazy about that choice of words, because some brainwashed believers actually think that secularism is some kind of religion, because it's characteristic of atheists, agnostics, freethinkers and humanists, as well as those who simply give no thought to going to church or reading the Bible. In other words, it's a large umbrella. The only criticism I have of this book is somewhat minor, but it still detracts one star from the 5-star rating I would have liked to give it. I expected a lot of anecdotes in the book, including his own personal anecdotes, but I would have liked to see a bit less of talk about himself and his friends.Anyone who reads widely of non-fiction will note that many authors of such works seem to dwell a bit overmuch on themselves and their life experiences. I would have preferred a bit less of talk about himself and maybe a little more about the hardships of being a freethinker in this country that prides itself on being "free."I would encourage True Believers to read this book, too, but even if they do, they may view it entirely through their own ideological lenses. It would be helpful if they reflected on the meanness and narrow-mindedness of many Christians toward their unchurched neighbors. And, of course, any bona-fide secularist should read the book. You might get some ideas from it that would promote some social interaction with other secularists. We are a growing number, and it's time we all came out from the shadows. Some Christians love to promote the notion that they are being hushed or punished or discriminated against. I guess they think being a Christian should make you automatically a victim or a martyr. But the shoe is definitely on the other foot, in America, and that's what this book points out clearly.

In contrast to some of atheistic literature, this book concentrates what non-believers are or can be, instead of what they're not. Some of the topics:Morality - Morality is developed from socialization, culture, intelligence and experience. Religion may or may not be included.Societies - Explores the correlation that secular societies tend to be better places to liveTrying times - Examines the myth "There are no atheists in foxholes" and provides several example of how secularism helps people deal with crisesDeath - You didn't exist 100 years ago and won't exist 100 years from now -- so live NOW!Definitions"Atheism" - Describes what is missing"Agnostic" - Either too wishy-washy or too academic to be useful"Secular humanist" - Celebrates the positives about life"Aweist" - Even more!

What a fantastic book. Zuckerman doesn't try to convert anybody but demonstrates through statistics and anecdotes that being secular can not only be full of meaning and wonder, but in some cases it can leave you better prepared for what life throws at you. This book is extremely well written, moves quickly, and is full of heart.I not only recommend it for us secular folk. Our religious friends and neighbors who are interested in understanding the now 25% (and growing!) of Americans who are not religious will come away with less fear of us. Who knows, they may even find some things to think about.

A wonderful piece of writing by a wonderful Secularist. This is a book that should be read by all those living in the US. It has great information on how secular societies are leading the world in almost all aspects. It also shows how many people live wonderful lives without any religion whatsoever and that is something of great value. This book is easy to read and very straight forward. Pick it up! You won't be disappointed.

An excellent book to explain being non-religious to the religious who can't understand how the secular can have morals and an ethical way of living. For me, it helped me better identify who I am and how to express my views.

Excellent and quick read. I'd highly encourage people who ARE religious to read this book as I think it does an excellent job of dispelling the many unfortunate myths and assumptions religious people make (or are brainwashed to think) about non-believers.

This three inch book of 650 pages is printed in what - to my tired old eyes - seems to be an eight point font, or less, and I struggled to read the closely packed history at first. But I persevered, gradually focusing on the facts and not the font, and found the extra effort well rewarded. In fact, by the second day, I could not put this impressive magnum opus down. The Boer War (1899 - 1902) was to be the most costly, in terms of blood and treasure, in the hundred years of Queen Victoria's "little wars" period, and was a true forecast of the butchery that smokeless rifles fired from trenches would effect in the slaughter of WWI.Thomas Pakenham is in fact the 8th Earl of Longford, and his grandfather fought the Boers in South Africa, and was seriously wounded in a typical `last stand' affair where 80 of his fellow troops were killed. The author, besides being a respected and prize winning historian (perhaps best known for his The Scramble for Africa is also a noted arborist. The book offers great insights - several of which are detailed here for the first time- into the politics of the war, both in Cape Town and the government parliaments and leaders, that were behind the campaigns and battles. A drum roll of famous characters thunders through this work, Kitchener, Roberts ("Bobs"), Kipling, Botha, Jan Smuts, Chamberlain ... names that echo still.I thoroughly recommend this book for history lovers and for those seeking the widest picture of a complicated, tortuous and very political war - A.J.P. Taylor added to his recommend that "...the reader turns each page with increasing fascination and admiration". I certainly did.

Thomas Pakenham, the brother of historian Antonia Fraser, penned "The Boer War" in the early 1970s. He was privileged to have available a trusty tape recorder and the reedy voices of several of the Tommy Atkins Brits who actually foght in the war! The Boer War lasted from 1899-1902. Its purpose was to conquer the Boer republics of the Orange Free State (cattle and sheep farmers) and Transvaal home to the world's richest gold mines. One war had been fought in the early 1880s won by Britain leading to their conquering of the Natal region. The British government's headquarters were in Capetown in the Cape colony. The Jameson raid in 1895 launched by the British against the Transvaal had failed. Now in 1899 the second Boer war began. Its author was Sir Arthur Milner High Commissioner to the Cape Colony. This bold imperialist wanted all of Africa to be British on his own terms. His opponent was the President of the Transvall the aged Paul Kruger. The Conservative government in London backed Milner in his plans. PM Salisbury wanted to seize South Africa for its rich gold lode and to ensure it would be secure as a fueling stop on the voyage around Africa to India the jewel in the British empire. The war was noted for its long sieges in which British civilians and soldiers were beseiged by Boers. The major sieges were at Mafeking and Ladysmith. The Boers were a tough opponent believing in guerilla warfare led by such fierce warriors as Jan Smuts and De Wet. The war dragged on feeding into its bloody maw over 22,000 British dead matched by an equal number of the Boers. Blacks were also killed in the thousands. Both the Boers and British were anti-black treating these people with great cruelty.Among the reasons for folks on this side of the pond to study the Boer War are the following:a. Lord Kitchener's widespread use of the concentration camp system to hold Boer women, children and POW's would be a harbinger of the horrors of twentieth century concentration camps in World War II and in the Soviet Gulag.b. Smokeless powder and automatic weapons were used widely for the first time in major battles. The time of the cavalry horse was ending as defensive warfare (seen in its most salient focus in World War I) would come to the fore.c. The war was one of the costliest in English history. It reminds Americans of our long ordeals in Vietnam, Afghanistan and Iraq.d. Men like the Commander Lord Roberts failed to properly administer hospitals, organize transport for his troops and failed to see that warfare was changing in the modern age.e. The war was the introduction to combat of such British luminaries of World War I as John French, HH. Kitchener and Douglas Haig.f. The war gave Winston Churchill his first fame. Churchill had been held in Praetoria as a captive of the Boers; he returned home to write a bestseller about his adventures winning him a seat in the British House of Commons. Great Britain proved victorious due to over 250,000 troops committed to the grisly campaign. The Orange Free State and Transvaal became possessions of the British Empire. This book is the sine qua non of literature on the Boer War. It is 615 densely written pages which will not whet the appetite of everyone. If you like detailed accounts of battles and a backstairs look at diplomacy this book will gratify your interest.

This is hands down the best Historical research on the Boer war. it is free of the common revisionism and PC found in most contemporary histories of The Second Boer War/Anglo-Boer War. Pakenham shows both sides of the conflict and the reason behind it, without the nonsense so common in modern revisions. I must warn you, this book is laden with all sorts of minutia and details leading up to the war. Politics, Capitalism, and power abuse are all shown and how they led to this conflict and in great detail. Also has a good selection of pictures.

Good book. Tough men.

Both a very good red and a very informative book. If you want to read one book about that war s it. If you want to read several start with this one.Kipling and Conan Doyle would have hated it.

My 19 month old daughter now recognizes Elmo and so I thought getting a potty themed book to introduce her to the idea of going to the potty would be great. However, I was disappointed when I got the book because even though it says it is targeted for ages 1-3, it is not well written for that age group. P is for Potty sounds like a board book that would be simple, direct, and to the point, so I was surprised when I opened it up and saw paragraphs. I wish I had seen some previews of the book to realize that it is not a good intro to potty training book for the younger set. My daughter likes looking at the pictures and lifting the flaps, but she cannot sit through reading each page (she becomes impatient to turn the page). The biggest issue I have with this book is that it is too long and there is so much dialogue, making it harder for a child my daughter's age to follow along (There is so much Elmo says "...." and Albie says "....." and Elmo's mommy says "...."). It may have worked better if the author simply told the story instead of all the "talking" by different characters. It also doesn't have the word repetition that you find in other toddler board books. I also felt there was something about the vocabulary used in the book that made it more complicated than other books targeted for the 1-3 year old range. In my opinion that storyline is too long and there is too much going on for a 1-3 year old to follow, especially if you want it to be an introduction to potty training (versus a storybook for a child who is at the tail end of potty training and has the occasional accident). Here is the storyline/plot: Elmo and his mom are babysitting Elmo's cousins, Albie and baby Jo Jo. The baby is fussing because he is wet and needs a diaper change. He gets a diaper change while Albie announces twice that he used to wear diapers but is now learning to use the potty. They have lunch and then Elmo uses the big toilet in the bathroom and they show the steps (wiping, flushing, washing hands). Albie doesn't need to use the little potty. They play in the sandbox and then Albie has an accident and changes into dry clothes. He is reassured by Elmo's mom that it is ok. Later, Albie successfully uses the little potty. Then Albie gets picked up by his mom and tells her all about his day.In terms of the quality of the book, the pages are much thinner than the typical board book. As others have mentioned, even though it now has over 30 flaps to lift, they are unrelated to the potty and the storyline, and are really just an added distraction if you are wanting to use this book as an educational tool about potty training. They are great activities for learning "before and after" (for example, a lamp that is off and then you flip the tab and it is now on or blocks that are stacked up high and you flip the flap and they are knocked over). In conclusion, had I seen a copy of this book before I purchased it (such as a "look inside" preview that some books have on Amazon), I wouldn't have purchased this for my daughter. I've included some photos of the inside of the pages so that others can take a glance before they decide to purchase.

My big one loves it (3) and my little one (20 months) loves to read with us and look under all the flaps. Here is a tip mommies! About a month ago, my son was 3 years and 2 months. He didn't want to go on the potty. One of his friends came over and his mom and I had a cup of coffee. She told me that when her son was 2 1/2, she took him to day care one day and they told her that the next day to bring in SIX PAIRS OF UNDIES AND SIX FULL CHANGES OF CLOTHES because there would be no more diapers. They said pull ups don't work bc the kids just think they are diapers. The trick is to make them feel the wet. It gets cold on them and they don't like it. I was scared to ruin my rugs and furniture but I figured what the heck! So, the next day, I put him in his undies that I had eagerly bought on his 2nd birthday (hahahaha). He peed in them and came to be devasted "mommy!!! I am WET!!!! I need a bath! I am STICKY!!"I put him in the bath and threw his clothes in our other tub (figured that I would let a few sets pile up and then do a load). When he got out, he got fresh undies and fresh clothes, of course. He tried to ask for a "diapee" and I explained "nope this is it from now on. You can go on the potty and stay dry or poop and pee in your clothes and get sticky and cold and wet".About an hour later, my husband walked into our bathroom and he was SITTING ON THE TOILET WITH A POOP IN THE POTTY! We wiped his butt. Told him that we were so proud (he loves this and now asks every time "are you proud?". He got to pick a treat out of the treat bucket (left over Halloween Candy, lol) and he gets to stick a sticker on my wall in my bathroom (it is shiny paint so easy to remove). And that was it. He went pee and poop all on his own. I had my hubby teach him how to push his "winkie" to shoot in the toilet. He goes pee on the big potty and poop on his little potty on the floor. He comes and gets up (carrying the poop in the removable potty bowl - which is totally gross) and he is so proud and we go in and wipe him and clean the potty after he dumps it in his big potty. We did make one mistake. He had gymnastics the 3rd day and we put him in pullups bc we didn't want him to poop on the other little gymnasts :)!!! This kind of backed us up and he was wetting his underpants a bunch of times a day for a few days but we just didn't make a big deal about it and he eventually chose to stay dry on his own. He still makes mistakes but he knows where his undies are so he will strip and throw his wet clothes in the bathtub in his bathroom (he gets embarrased I think and doesn't want to be ridiculed for a mistake - which i get so it is fine with me). and then he goes and gets his underpants from his closet shelf and puts them on. He does fine at night.I am posting this for the mommies who are buying this book because they have talked about potty training with their little one but they aren't budging. I really hope this helps!!! Please feel free to reach out to me if you have any questions :) vanostrandsamantha@gmail.comGood Luck and I Wish You Lots of Dry Underpants!!!! GOD Bless you :)

My 21mo toddler boy loves Sesame Street and we’ve started potty training-I didn’t expect too much from this book and was still disappointed.Don’t recommend for toddlers in toilet training.•The wording is confusing, long, drawn out, hard to follow.•The lift up flaps are very thin paper-cardboardish, hard to open and rip, tear. Frustrating for a toddler. Not made for their chubby little hands, fingers.Once the flaps are opened, they don’t close. On the plus side:Bright and fun pictures. (Make up your own story to go with the pictures and your toddlers needs)Tons of flaps to lift and peep (tear) -it’s very cute, but not made for chubby toddlers fingers. It’s a challenging. (this book and toilet training, why add to the toddlers frustration?)

There are cool little flaps to open, which is a fun concept. But I hate reading this book. It's not much of a story, and the way it's written isn't very creative or interesting or fun, and I don't think it does a very good job of focusing on the potty in a useful way for my child. I'm trying to get my 2.5 year old toddler interested in starting to potty train, and this book really doesn't inspire any interest in trying the potty. Maybe this would be better for an older kid who is already potty training and having some setbacks. I don't know. All I know for sure is that this book "disappeared" after a couple of weeks because I don't ever want to read it again. I've had much better results and experiences from "Big Girl Panties" by Fran Manushkin, "Potty" by Leslie Patricelli, and "The Potty Book for Girls" by Alyssa Satin Capucilli.Edit: Also, the title is completely irrelevant to the book. Don't expect any reference to the alphabet.

Review

“This book could save you years of psychological struggle, yank you out of negative emotional patterns, and help propel you to a much happier, more productive life.”—Martha Beck, author of Finding Your Own North Star “An exciting alternative to the usual approach of so many self-help books. Harris explains how we can work with ourselves as we are, rather than aggressively trying to alter ourselves. I’m impressed by the simple and effective methods of ACT.”—David Richo, PhD, author of How to Be an Adult in Relationships “One of the most hopeful (and helpful) messages we can take away from this book is this: we can learn to do the things that matter, even when our minds say it’s not possible.”—Spirituality & Health

Even some of the examples and descriptions he gives in this books is identical to the ones used in The Happiness Trap. The Happiness Trap is the best book that I've read all year and since then I've picked up other books on ACT. However, The Confidence Gap just seems like the same ol' book to me. I'm a little disappointed since I really appreciate ACT. I was hoping for something new. This would be a great first book if you are new to ACT. But if you have read the Happiness Trap then I would stay away from this one.

I'm a junior in college, well off, and in no sort of life-trouble. I've just never had confidence in myself. I never felt like I was ready to take charge of my life, have never dated, and was always one of the awkward kids who couldn't socialize with new people because my throat would fail to open and my tongue twists on itself every 3 words or so. I was fine with friends and family, most of the time at least (sometimes my parents made me ashamed of myself, despite them doing a single thing or saying a single word. I would simply anxiously think to myself "my parents probably even think I'm weird.")3 days ago I felt I had hit some sort of rock bottom level of motivation and simultaneously had the highest levels of generalized anxiety I had ever felt. I have always had some degree of anxiety since my teenage years or maybe even earlier, but recently I felt like I was losing control of my mind, losing control of the voice inside my head. Any efforts I made to improve my mental condition were met with self-doubt, I would give up on my efforts, and my confidence would drop even lower. I recognized that I was at a point where I had the potential to spiral into a depression, because my anxiety was beginning to rise at an exponential rate.I must admit I haven't read a book in years. I'm too lazy, reading is too boring, I don't like being told what to do, etc. All of these types of thoughts were preventing me from ever doing it, but I still passed through classes easily somehow, never improving my work ethic, or feeling proud of accomplishing something like reading a book.Well, I read this book in 3 days. One day I woke up and couldn't fall back asleep, at approx 6 am. I get up at 11 or later most of the time so this was waaaay to early to get things done. But I couldn't fall back asleep and then my feelings of anxiety as usual just switched back on. Immediately I was just done with that feeling. It was getting worse, after all.I went on Amazon, searched for "confidence books", found this one, didn't read any reviews but saw it had a good rating, bought it for Kindle, put it on my tablet, and started reading. It was a book that I trusted myself to at least open, and as soon as I did, I read some interesting stuff. I first read about how we are NOT our thoughts, we aren't all the culminations of the demands and actions of a dictator inside our head. Like some sort of mental trap, we have stuck ourselves in cycling lies such as a false understanding of motivation ("I'm waiting until I feel motivated to start running."), a false understanding of confidence ("I'm waiting until I feel confident before I try dating."), and a false understanding of fear ("I need to be fearless when I go up on that stage.")I'm trying to stop myself from typing too much. I'm just so excited, because something I have never thought I would ever type into some sort of product review is, this has turned my life around. I redefined my understanding of confidence, have practiced the well researched psychologist-backed methods for defusing from your own thoughts to fully focus on what the senses and what is happening in the present, and finally I can see some sort of path towards improving my confidence. I am not saying after reading the book I am immediately super confident and can make myself do whatever I want to to improve my life, I'm saying I now have the tools and enough understanding of the human psyche that I can actually feel some sort of direction in my life.I fully committed to what the book said. I was always a person who would just skip the details in most tasks. I didn't even read books before. But somehow, before I was reading the book, I had that stroke of anger, about my anxiety, that I felt propelled me into taking action, not this book specifically. But, thanks to specifically this book, I now know how I can CAUSE this to happen, not wait. Because I made an effort while using Russ's methods, and after I recognized that through his writing itself he was actually teaching us the basics of defusing from your thoughts (which blew my mind by the way, thank you Russ), I got totally engaged and focused in the book, and then the book taught me about focus itself, and how all we have to do to be focused and have to peak performance is to defuse and be mindful, and now it's just like everything makes sense. My head is clear. I didn't stop my thoughts, that's not what it's about. It is about truly understand that, once again, we are NOT our thoughts.Last I will mention, without shame, that I had tried using drugs and alcohol to cope with anxiety over the course of about 2 years. This had definitely contributed to making my anxiety worse. I say without shame because I can now admit that I know it was wrong to use them to try and improve my confidence. It was wrong not because I was using illicit substances but because I had believed it to be the answer, and to believe the answer to improving my mentality and attitude towards myself was anything other than taking actual actions was one of the wrongest wrongs I have ever had commited in my life. Now I am moving on. I have properly set goals for myself, like "jog 30 mins tonight", not "be the confident attractive beast you always dreamed of being." And if my mind tells me not to do it, and I can clearly tell that not doing it would not help me, then I have the tools to work around the feelings of discomfort and thoughts of "I can't do it.". And I will keep using these tools in other parts of life, parts I have not yet delved into.I read a book for the first time in 3 years, and now I feel great.

â€œWhether you call it ‘lack of confidence,’ ‘fear of failure,’ ‘performance anxiety,’ or ‘self-doubt,’ the chances are it’s cost you dearly in your life. Take a moment to consider: What have you given up? What have you missed out on? What opportunities have you lost because of it?Over the years, I’ve worked with literally thousands of people who have put their hopes, dreams, and ambitions on hold because they ‘don’t have enough confidence.’ And the sad thing is, this lack of confidence is not due to any fault of their own. It is certainly not because of stupidity, or laziness, or negative thinking, or a deprived childhood, or a chemical imbalance in the brain. It is simply because they do not know the rules of the confidence game. ...On your journey, you’ll discover a revolutionary new approach to maximizing human potential: a model of change that is firmly based on cutting-edge research in human psychology. And you’ll learn to develop a mind-set known as psychological flexibility—a powerful mental state that enables you to respond effectively to fear, anxiety, and self-doubt. You’ll also learn to develop genuine, lasting self-confidence. And you’ll learn to enhance your performance in any area of your life—from sports, business, and creative arts to socializing, parenting, and sex!”~ Russ Harris from The Confidence GapRuss Harris is one of the world’s leading authorities on one of the most cutting-edge forms of therapy known as Acceptance and Commitment Training, or ACT for short (pronounced like the word act not A.C.T.).ACT is essentially a powerful blend of mindfulness training and cognitive behavioral therapy. I’ll be covering Russ’s first book (The Happiness Trap) soon where he provides a general intro to it.This book is, as you probably guessed by now, all about helping us optimize our confidence. Russ basically tells us that we’ve been following the wrong rule book if we want to dial in our confidence. He presents 10 rules on how to win the game of confidence we’ll explore in the Note.I'm excited to share some of my favorite Big Ideas:1. Confidence Gap Defined - Thinking that feelings precede action.2. 10 Rules - For winning the game of confidence.3. Defusion + Workability - Two very important words.4. Presto! Note: I listened to the audiobook with the book as a companion. It was such a great book that I have purchased 4 additional copies and send them to friends! Not sure how this book has been under the radar compared to other books of its category but in my opinion, it is by far the most practical book I have read in the realm of self help since "first thing first" by Covey circa 1994!The author explains concepts, gives personal examples, then gives exercises to readers/listeners. The book is an easy read but not easy to grasp. I probably listened to some chapters 5 -6 times. The book has a golden list of values that sets it apart from others. There are many concepts in the book to prepare you for the real world. I have found the following very useful so far:- Workability- Action first- Value based successIn the past 30 years, every decade, 1 or 2 books have been paramount to my personal growth and development, and "Confidence Gap" is definitely on this decade's list!PS: the narrator in the audio version has an amazing and captivating voice.
