Richard Hunter provides great stories to reinforce his message, and recommendations to shift the culture, communication, and brand of IT. The message makes so much sense, yet these types of organizational changes are the most challenging to affect. Applying these principles will totally shift the influence and impact you have with your peers and CEO and the results you deliver.

This clear, short work is one of the most insightful books on the role of CIOs, and I.T. organizations in general, I have read.The I.T. organization often struggles with its identity, disdained by other functional groups in an enterprise and defensive about its contributions. To bridge this gulf, the authors prescribe a model that is simple and precise. The CIO, and the CIO's organization, delivers value in only two ways: positively affecting either business processes or business decision making. That's it. Refining the model a bit, the authors separate I.T.'s customers into two groups: those external to the organization and those inside the organization. This produces a classic 2x2 quadrant, with customer types on one axis and the value types on another. All technology-driven, or technology-enabled, initiatives that produce real value to the business or enterprise will fit naturally into some section of this matrix.I heartily recommend that all I.T. leaders read this book. This book does an excellent job of laying out what IT leaders need to do to make their departments provide a competitive advantage. Delivering technology is table-stakes. To be successful as a CIO, you need to make sure that you have the right messaging, that your organization is focused on selecting the right projects, and you need to put processes in place to ensure that you actually get the benefits you need from those projects.

I bought this as a non-IT professional looking to adopt and prove value for some technological investments. The examples and stories are obviously from the IT field, but I was surprised to realize that the concepts are applicable in other professional fields/departments that have historically been seen as a "cost", or have had a hard time proving credibility within the organization, like marketing. I've skimmed over too many management books lacking in substance, so I'm keeping this one!

This book is simultaneously very, very smart and very, very practical. I loved it. Whether you're a business person and want to understand the strategic role of IT, or an IT leader and want to learn how to communicate (better yet, how to enhance) your value to the business, this is the book to open. There are at least three or four tools/frameworks where I said to myself, "Oh, that makes so much SENSE." Start with the virtuous cycle of IT capability projects, for example. Very satisfying.

I wish my company CIO, CTO, IT Managers, and Solution Architects would read this book. I knew much of the information and concepts from being a consulting and creating solutions for 20+. Unfortunately, most IT professions never will obtain the depth and width of the experiences I had. However, it did provide me many insights that I did not have. All professionals whether in an IT or business profession should read this book no matter what level or stage they are in their career.

This book explains the real world of IT.It shows the reasons for the generalized discontent with IT that afflicts most companies. More, it shows how to turn around the IT department and create a productive relationship with all other areas. Insightful book about the global rise of living standards during the industrial era. Charts a path between the political left and right on where the data supports inferences on economic growth, health and wellbeing, and inequality. Deaton also generally reflects a recognition that economics often serves best by obtaining and analyzing data to demonstrate the impact of particular policies, but that actual policy choices really often reflect considerations of norms and values that cannot be determined by the data alone.However, I agree with many other reviewers that the final section on the ineffectiveness of international aid is a mismatch from the rest of the book. It is the least data-centered of the sections and the most like a one-sided persuasive essay. I think he raises a number of valid concerns and considerations about the efficacy of international aid as it is conducted, but I fail to be convinced by his seeming conviction that efforts to reform how aid is conducted would be fruitless. He comes off as a person who has become deeply disillusioned by development aid and can no longer see the legitimacy of any arguments in its favor. However, his even-handedness and open-mindedness about other economic matters in other areas of the book does mean that I am more willing to fully consider his arguments on this issue than I might have been from someone who had not demonstrated such qualities on other issues.

Deaton has been studying this for more than 25 years. I have been studying this topic for 4 years for a local non-partisan civic organization. If I have one recommendation to read on this topic it would be this book. It lays out the facts and issues I have gleaned from a myriad of sources over the past few years.

This is clearly the most insightful book I've read for sometime. In contrast to so much we read today, this book is optimistic about social and economic progress. It's policy recommendations for developed countries are largely hurried and not very well justified -- all except for one, and that one is very important. He makes a very strong, fact based claim that foreign aide as we think of it is largely wasted. Amelioration of world poverty is just not feasible given the infrastructure of the countries that need it most. Clearly, just writing checks doesn't do it, he claims, despite the good intentions those accompanying those checks. But he doesn't advocate doing nothing. He just advocates a carefully administered program that helps underdeveloped countries, but only if they help themselves first.

Some great economists, which we used to know only through very formal papers, are proving to be good writer. Among them, Deaton excels. It brings very good stories with an exposition that we feel like reading a Tolstoi of Science. He knows how to tell good stories, which any scientific writing should search, and which involves concepts and notions that evolve. There some impressing exposition on Wealth and Health, on Incone inequality within the USA, on income inequality in the world, as well as on some attempted remedies. Has the human race made progress since the days when all our lives were nasty, brutish, and short?Some might think this question patently silly, since it would appear to answer itself. But Angus Deaton finds in it a point of entry into his inquiry on “health, wealth, and the origins of inequality,” the subtitle of his ambitious new book. He is in no doubt that humanity has progressed, not steadily but by fits and starts — and continues to do so to this day. “Today,” he writes, “children in sub-Saharan Africa are more likely to survive to age 5 than were English children born in 1918 . . . [and] India today has higher life expectancy than Scotland in 1945.”In The Great Escape, Deaton, a veteran professor of economics and international affairs at Princeton, explores inequality — between classes and between countries — with a detailed statistical analysis of trends in infant mortality, life expectancy, and income levels over the past 250 years. He concludes that the large-scale inequality that plagues policymakers and reformers alike in the present day is the result of the progress humanity has made since The Great Divergence (between “the West and the rest”) since the advent of the Industrial Revolution. “Economic growth,” Deaton asserts, “has been the engine of international income inequality.”No argument there: Deaton is far from alone in this belief. Other scholars have written extensively about this topic in recent years. A Farewell to Alms: A Brief Economic History of the World, by Gregory Clark, is just one example.Late in the 18th Century, the countries of Northern Europe and North America on the one hand and those of Asia, Africa, the Middle East, and Latin America on the other hand were not that far apart as measured by the available indicators of health and income. Deaton cites “one careful study [that] estimates that the average income of all the inhabitants of the world increased between seven and eight times from 1820 to 1992.” However, that average obscures a harsh reality. The ever-quickening rate of change in “the West” since 1760 or so has widened the gap between (and within) countries to an extreme degree. Deaton terms the freedom from destitution and early death that so many of us now enjoy “The Great Escape,” taking his title from the 1963 film of that name about a massive escape of prisoners from a German P.O.W. camp in World War II.Only now is the gap closing between the rich nations and China and India (by far the world’s two biggest countries, with nearly 40 percent of the planet’s population and half the world’s poor). Deaton doesn’t consider a bright future for all a certainty, not by any means, in view of global climate change and the ever-present threat of killer pandemics. But, assuming the species continues to thrive, there is sufficient data available now to have some confidence that the gross inequality now existing among nations will not persist forever. After all, five sub-Saharan African countries are now growing their economies faster than China’s.However, that misleading factoid ignores the outsize role that China has played in “the Great Escape” globally. Deaton notes, as have other observers, that “the number [of] people in the world living on less than a (2005) dollar a day fell from about 1.5 billion in 1981 to 805 million in 2008 . . . [This] decline in numbers is driven almost entirely by the Chinese growth miracle; if China is excluded, 785 million people lived on less than a dollar a day in 1981 compared with 708 million in 2008.” (This reality is one of the principal reasons why Paul Polak and I insist in The Business Solution to Poverty that traditional methods to end poverty have largely failed. After all, China’s methods were hardly traditional!)In the course of exploring the historical record of growing inequality on the world stage, Deaton delves deeply into the role of foreign aid (officially, Overseas Development Assistance, or ODA) and finds it comes up short. ”You cannot develop other countries from the outside with a shopping list for Home Depot, no matter how much you spend,” he writes. With the exception of outside interventions in public health programs — including such breakthroughs as the eradication of smallpox and the near-success with polio — Deaton finds that foreign aid has done more harm than good. He argues that where the conditions for development are present, outside resources are unnecessary. Where they’re absent, ODA entrenches local elites, distorts the local economy, and discourages local initiative. The author insists that “the record of aid shows no evidence of any overall beneficial effect.”But that’s only part of the story.In 2012, ODA totaled about $136 billion. Throw in another $30 billion or so from NGOs, and total outside assistance comes to under $200 billion annually. However, net resource transfers from developing countries to rich countries are well in excess of $500 billion annually. (Transfers reached a peak of $881 billion in 2007, fell with the Great Recession, but are rising again.) Quite apart from the fact that an estimated 70 percent of “foreign aid” is actually spent on products and services from donor nations, ODA merely puts a dent in the huge disadvantage that poor countries suffer as a result of lopsided trade policies and prevailing political and commercial imbalances. In any case, just one factor in those resource flows — remittances from overseas residents of poor countries to their families back home — are twice as large as ODA.The Great Escape is a worthy effort from a senior scholar whose wide-ranging studies have led him to big-picture conclusions. Policymakers and practitioners should be listening carefully.

I learned a lot from this book. I wish the author had made it a little less graph heavy, but I liked that he thoroughly investigated all sides of his arguments. When I started reading this book I wasn't exactly sure where it was going. When I was 100 pages in I told myself I'm not finishing this. I felt that the author was a cry baby with no point. As I continued I could see where the FTC wasn't going to do him justice because " don't confuse me with the facts, my mind is made up." It's still a cry baby story but it does have a point and it needs to be said.I have a friend who is being audited by the IRS. He's in his 80s and still working. He sells life insurance and they are giving him a hard time about his expenses. A CPA does his taxes and he's very careful about his deductions. The more he tells me the more I can fit into this book. I recommended he read it to see what lies ahead. He might not resolve this in his lifetime.I wish these people the best.

The author experienced the worst that our government can deliver to its taxpaying, working citizens. This book documents the effect on our lives by petty, government employees in a bureaucracy that is hidden -- until they come after you. It would make a great fiction movie, but it's not fiction. It's true. Most educated taxpayers are not aware of how the government can change their lives negatively when they target you. In particular, the author shows how the FCC is the prosecutor and the judge, and tried to ruin a business which would affect livelihoods of its employees. It's surreal in a free society that this phenomenon is rolling unchecked. It is still happening. There is not a good ending at this point.

It's a story that needs to be told. FTC targeting a mid sized company with the help of Tiversa. The innocent American public believes our tax dollars go to defend people like Michael Daugherty from hackers, leakers and blackmailers But what do ya know? They don't. In fact the FTC preys on people w/ just enough capital so it looks like they're working. It's so easy for them to play with people's lives. This book also stands as a warning. If there's nothing wrong w/ your business then DON'T respond to fishing expeditions.

I wish this story was unbelievable, but in today's world of Arbitrary Rule by the Man (regulator and government bureaucrat) such happenings are more often the rule than the exception. Regulatory capture, then CYA for incompetence ends with the FTC blaming the victims for a theft which only occurred because of the repeated incompetence of the FTC itself. Thank goodness for the indomitable spirit of Michael Daughterly who refuses to quietly roll over and instead fights back. Great story. Can't wait to see how it ends. Read the book so you can be part of the effort to writing a happy ending.

When reading this book, I felt as though I was "right there". Interesting details -- such as, the level of care and expertise in handling human tissues in the medical laboratory, LabMD. It is explained, for instance, how, in the cancer-detection process -- in order for the pathologist to read the tissues, the tissues need to be sliced so thin, that, no one is allowed to walk by the tech working with the tissues -- because the breeze, alone, could blow the tissue samples away. These details show the delicacy, care, and level of commitment, required to properly run the lab that serves cancer patients.Then, in direct contrast to delicacy and care ...... In comes the FTC, with little concern for the importance of the work being done in the lab, or about cancer being detected. LabMD's fight against government overreach is courageous. Many other medical businesses are probably too intimidated to step up and fight the FTC.This book is well written. It kept me fascinated from the beginning of the story until the end.

Great book. Michael Daugherty is a hero to me. He does right and impossibly difficult thing in standing up to the US government and corrupt forces when falsely accused, and at great financial and personal cost to himself. All in the hopes to make things better for others who may face these out of control government ogres in the future knowing his fate is likely sealed. A story of a man with solid caricter and unwavering stamina. The world would be a much better place with many more like him!!! Thank you Mr. D for shedding light on the despotic FTC zealots and their despicably insidious cronies.

You can't play the game if you don't know the rules and when the rules are constantly changing, the game becomes unfair. Everyone should read this powerful account of big government bullying, and cheer on Michael Daugherty and his decision to not "play the game" and acquiesce to the government. The FTC's questionable practices set small businesses up to fail in this country and Michael Daugherty is having none of it. If you own a small business that has to adhere to government guidelines of any kind, reading this book is a good source to understanding how compliance is key and oftentimes not enough to protect yourself. This book gives you an insight into the author's personality - some reviewers found this unnecessary - I think the personal stories give you an understanding of the author's integrity and tenacity. Government overreach is happening all over our country and most businesses don't have the resources to fight. Our government is counting on that fact, The Devil Inside The Beltway, proves it.

Easy read. Somewhat disjointed at points. Overall I enjoyed it. There are some fishy things that went on with Tiversa and the government,but I'm not sure I see a conspiracy with the FTC. LimeWire was the biggest issue and the FTC should have shut it down long before it was.

Bought it used and it was in great shape when it arrived. I think I saved $6Well worth it. I just wish I could play 1/10 of a % like Pagey himself.So I practice practice practice. The book is well written and since we grew up with the songs it helps a lot.Some of it is way over my head. There are 5-6 songs that are fairly reasonable to understand

For years I spent my money buying cowboy chord "made easy for guitar" fake books and never learned anything that didn't sound like campfire music. With the advent of tablature and Hal Leonard books you can now learn an accurately played version of songs by your favorite artists. Granted they are more dollars and cents but are well worth learning the version you really want to be playing. Now, if they would just print these in a format that the book could be opened up and laid flat without breaking the binding life would be perfect.

Do not purchase the Kindle edition. It can not be zoomed in correctly on any device and will frustrate beyond measure.

Good gift for a zeppelin fan learning to play guitar

The transcriptions in this book are very accurate, and in some parts even goes in depth into explain somethings, like pointing out notes that are really tape echo, and explaining why the G changes from beat one in the first two verses to beat two in the third verse onward in Dazed and Confused.It's also very complete, including all of the guitar parts, and in some places transcribing other instruments for guitar.However, there are some glaring errors in this book. There are places where the tablature does not match the notes that are written above. I've noticed this in several places throughout the book, and usually the notation is correct. So, if you only read tab, you might run into some problems in some spots. Either way, watch out for the mistakes.Overall, I don't think you'll be disappointed. But, they could have spent a little more time proofreading before going to press.

Has many details about the original performance of each song. Very useful for any player who wants to learn the intricacies of these songs. Thank you.

Extremely detailed guitar tablature for the Led Zepplin Best of Album. Lots of tricky guitar licks to work through and many classics that are very fun to play. I'm very glad I purchased this it will keep me occupied for a long while :)

I bought this for my boyfriend's birthday. He is a pretty good guitarist who plays by ear and by sheet. Not a professional, plays for fun and a huge Led Zeppelin fan. I've bought him other guitar books before and this is honestly the only one he plays around with. That in itself sold it for me on this review.

OK for relief from academic orthodoxy. It is an intentionally blasphemous parody, so don't buy/read it if this may offend. Sometimes it may be interesting to see how an anti/non-religious author views the substance of the faith of other people. IF so, this writing may satisfy such an occasional urge.

The book is first and foremost a lampoon of Christianity, more specifically, the early years of the church. St. Timothy is a first hand observer St. Paul's effort to expand the market for Christianity. Other Vidal books have documented his cynicism of Christianity and the religious right, but "Live from Golgotha" clearly sets out to satire Christianity from its source: St. Paul.St. Timothy (blue-eyed, hyacinth curls, glutton for the older powerful ladies) is the main narrator for the story. St. Paul is the great fund raiser and dogma developer for the Christian church. While fighting off St. Paul's homosexual advances, St. Timothy experiences the charismatic St. Paul and his miraculous stage show from up close. The business interests from the future, namely NBC and its parent company General Electric, plan to utilize their time travel technology to allow them to transport a television crew back to the time of the Crucifixion at Golgotha. With the intent of sweeping the TV ratings, studio executives are transported to 96 AD in the form of holograms. St. Timothy is their main contact; the executives spare no expense to help St. Timothy prepare his Gospel. Apparently, a mysterious hacker has accessed history at its core and is erasing all other historical documentations of Jesus and his early church. So, St. Timothy must negotiate with self-serving holograms from the future. At times, he will have two holograms of the same person in his room, sent back from the future, but from ten years apart, so their holograms will be of varying quality.Gore Vidal takes a cynical and heretical view of religion and emphasizes Christianity's objectives as self-promotion in pursuit of the all mighty dollar. St. Paul is a charismatic marketer who rolls into a town with his dog-and-pony show. Sometimes, he is taken in and provided large sums of money, other times; he is nearly stoned to death. Vidal makes references to Saint Paul's Holy Rolodex of names used for fundraising and of Jesus' attempt to lower the Prime Rate as the real reason for Jesus' ousting of the money-lenders from the temple.With the aid of worldly knowledge he gains from a television that is transported back through time, St. Timothy transforms from an innocent apostle's assistant to an aggressive deal maker. If you can pardon the blasphemy, you will laugh and gain a new perspective of the early church. My favorite parts are the Yiddish speaking disciples, St. Timothy's gradual habituation towards "holograms" from the future, and Vidal's greatest invention; the juggling, soft-shoe dancing, seizure-prone St. Paul. Vidal seems to have an interesting response to the mantra "What would Jesus do?" According to Vidal, Jesus would erase all the material that refers to him that is today's lexicon of "Christianity."

I adore Vidal. Bought as a gift for a friend and excellent condition.

I did not find this book of interest. In fact, I had to make myself continue reading it to the end.

An outstanding satire that reveals all we suspected about the tricks and double-dealing of Hollywood insiders since the silent days.

Read several times, cannot understand why Amazon does not produce a Kindle version of this wonderful and very funny book. May be you will do this on the first anniversary of the giant's passing away?

Nearly $40 for access to only 6 tests--3 of which are the same exams as the previous edition--and the other 2 of them are online only? Really? Come on ACT...you can do better. The 2 online tests are not a huge draw, since there are already many free, official practice ACTs you can find online (google "ACT Action Plan" for more info). Either way, you will still have to print them out at home at your own cost--in the interest of "practicing the way you play," you should never take full ACTs on a screen, only paper.$20 would be a more reasonable price--the College Board's SAT Guide has 8 tests for $18, and all of them are printed. In fact, the physical book that is included is the exact same as the last edition. Thus, the Prep Pack's markup seems to be directly related to the included 6-month subscription to the "ACT Online Prep" program, which has a retail value of $39.95 on the ACT website. If, like me, you don't see great value in this program (ACT, Inc. recently announced plans to create a free version of ACT Online Prep called ACT Academy), then you would be better off simply buying the paper book instead: The Official ACT Prep Guide, 2018: Official Practice Tests + 400 Bonus Questions OnlineAbout me: I'm a Harvard grad, ACT/SAT perfect scorer, and professional ACT tutor since 2002.

This book is still available to purchase on Amazon, but the link in the front cover of the book to the online resources "onlineprep.act.org/login" doesn't seem to work. So, I went to the ACT website and found a hyperlink to Prep Pack and that link doesn't work either. Still hunting for how to get access to the online resources....The book is also now outdated as the new Prep Pack for 2018-2019 has the "new" test that is in the 2018-2019 ACT Real Prep Guide. The primary reason for the three stars is the newer book has more tests, so why get the older book?UPDATED--while the link inside the front cover didn't seem to work, once I peeled off the Access Code, the link printed on that instruction card worked--so tear off the plastic covering the access code and use the instructions printed on that separate card.

This is a well put together study program that not only tackles each specific topic, but also addresses test taking skills. This came with an online code for study as well. (This was a $40 dollar free add-on.) I will add to this review after my two teens retake the ACT to report any increases in scores.

This book has been very helpful. It has many ways Nd rules on how you can past your ACT. I am now confident enough to take test now that i have been studying with this book

I'll let you know how well it works after my granddaughter takes it this year & see how much her score improves.

I got this for my granddaughter she's a freshman and she loves it!

My daughter is in the 10th grade. She has been working with this book and with the interactive guide purchased with it. This book is a must have!

So many practice tests are online, but the paper and pencil practice in this book replicates the real test taking experience.
