Review

A New York Times bestseller, a finalist for the NBCC John Leonard First Novel Prize, a finalist for the PEN/Robert W. Bingham Prize for Debut Fiction, a finalist for the New York Public Library Young Lions Award, and named a Best Book of 2016 by NPR, Entertainment Weekly, Vogue, and others."Ferociously moving. . .a lush book, a book of so many secrets, betrayal. . .Despite Bennett’s thrumming plot, despite the snap of her pacing, it’s the always deepening complexity of her characters that provides the book’s urgency. . . I found myself reading not to find out what happens to the characters, but to find out who they are." –The New York Times Book Review“Ms. Bennett allows her characters to follow their worst impulses, and she handles provocative issues with intelligence, empathy and dark humor. Her risk-taking pays off.” –The New York Times"[A] compelling debut." –The New Yorker"Delivers lines that you'll want to savor and read out loud — because it's a story about secrets and betrayals, and part of the pleasure is your own sighs and gasps. It's both intimate and epic in scope. . .It hums along at a brisk, emotional pace — the kind of story that feels like it's moving fast, but really, it's moving deep." –NPR"[Bennett’s] storytelling does what all truly good fiction does: it draws you in and, on a universal level, connects with you and makes you think. . .The Mothers is a thought-provoking novel that will resonate long after it is read.” –USA Today"A fantastic debut novel. . .Some novels take place as you read them, while others grow more complicated as you think back on them. Bennett has written that rare combination: a book that feels alive on the page and rich for later consideration. . .Bennett is a writer to watch." –The Washington Post"One of the most exciting debuts of the fall." –LA Times"Luminous. . .engrossing and poignant, this is one not to miss." –People "[A] striking debut. . .America needs more books like The Mothers, which quietly, but critically, deepens our appreciation of the black experience, and expands our collective understanding of what it means now to be growing up and grasping for direction and affection." –O Magazine "With echoes of James Baldwin’s Go Tell It on the Mountain, The Mothers is not your typical coming-of-age novel: It begins with Nadia’s abortion, an experience often absent from our culture’s stories, and goes on to look at how women step in to nurture – and sometimes betray – one another." –Vogue"Brit Bennett comes charging out of Oceanside, California, with her stunning debut, The Mothers, a refreshingly fast-paced story of young love, race, and religious hypocrisy." –Vanity Fair"Bennett’s hypnotic writing hooks you from the very beginning and never lets you go in this spine-tingling study of destiny." –Essence"The Mothers isn’t about the consequences of decisions, but the repercussions of keeping secrets. . .funny, generous, and brightly written." –GQ"The Mothers is a beautifully written, sad and lingering book – an impressive debut for such a young writer." –The Guardian "A magical and startlingly realistic account of how powerfully our pasts can haunt us into adulthood—no matter how far we try to run from home." –Harper’s Bazaar"Gripping. . .the twenty-first century answer to Toni Morrison’s Sula. . .displays the same complexity in its portrayal of a pair of girlfriends as they grow together, and then apart, in a tight-knit African American community." –Elle "As much as The Mothers is steeped in black culture, it’s also pointedly, poignantly universal in its depiction of young love and friendship and hard choices. Maybe that qualifies as revolutionary, or maybe it’s just a really good novel, one that makes all the mess and magic of being young feel both new and familiar in the best kind of way." –Entertainment Weekly"Stunning… this heartbreaking coming of age tale takes a brutally honest look at how the decisions of our past can haunt us well into adulthood, no matter how far we try to distance ourselves." – Real Simple"As her flawed, lovable characters make decisions they regret and deal with the consequences, Bennett unravels their tangled lives with a devastating elegance." –The Houston Chronicle“[An] extraordinary novel, which mines human relationships so deeply and with such empathy… powerful.” –The Boston Globe"A bracing, heartfelt debut about family, motherhood and friendship, grief and healing and how all of these elements and our own shaky decisions constantly reshape our lives." –The Miami Herald"Shows remarkable confidence, flair and wisdom." –Seattle Times  “Don’t keep this beautifully written coming-of-age story to yourself.” —Newsday“Bennett’s evocation of the way her characters are haunted by their families’ pasts, her depiction of unbridled, damaging passion, and her masterful orchestration of different voices are techniques reminiscent of the great Toni Morrison.” –Dallas Morning News"What [Bennett] has done is fulfill the both simple and impossibly difficult mandate of any storyteller: to create a world her readers believe in and care about and draw meaning from…Extraordinary…You should be reading it." –Brooklyn Magazine "The book tells its biggest secret right away. But what happens after is more interesting. Think: the small-town drama of "Friday Night Lights" and the 'what ifs' of "Sliding Doors."–The Skimm"Amid roiling arguments about privilege, appropriation, and race, the 26-year-old writer — author of essays on all of the above — has written a first novel exactly for its time." –Vulture"A smart, insightful story about the unique ways in which women need one another, the ways only women are capable of hurting each other, and how a decision you make when you're young can ripple like a bullet through the rest of your life — whether you regret it, or not." –Refinery29 "The sad beauty of. . .The Mothers [is that] the characters’ pasts and deeper desires may be obfuscated by time. . . The Mothers brims with psychological insight and thoughtful commentary on the pain of loss and what motivates us to take actions maligned with our beliefs." –Huffington Post"Brit Bennett is so bracingly talented on the page. . . [The Mothers is] astute and absorbing and urgent." –Jezebel“A masterwork of modern fiction.” –Fusion“Gorgeous.” –PopSugar "Bennett's masterful first novel takes the reader on a multidimensional exploration of the things we desire and the things we settle for, what cements loyalties and what justifies betrayal." –Blavity"Brilliant. . .poignant, yet lovely. . .The Mothers is one of those novels you truly don’t want to put down." –LitHub “Bennett illuminates [her characters’] psychologies with the same delicate sense of economy, probing for the ways that their experiences produce complex emotional states only a fraction of which are known to one another — or even to themselves.” – The Millions"Extraordinary. . .Bennett broke my heart with this novel, with her investigation of friendship, secrets, love, choice and forgiveness." –Electric Literature"The Mothers is a quiet, beautiful text. . .As a reader, it is easy to trust where Bennett is taking you. Surrender is necessary, but with someone who can craft stories as skillfully as she can, it isn’t painful." –The Rumpus "Brit Bennett is the real thing. The Mothers is a stellar novel — moving, thoughtful. Stunning. I couldn’t put it down. I’m so excited to have this brilliant new voice in the world."  –Jacqueline Woodson, National Book Award-winning author of Brown Girl Dreaming  and Another Brooklyn"Brit Bennett’s debut novel The Mothers has stayed with me since I first read it, the words and the intimacy of the prose seeping into my pores… There is a real tenderness to how Bennett tells this story and to how she writes these characters who are so richly fleshed out, so unbearably human." –Roxane Gay, author of Bad Feminist and An Untamed State "What haunted me the most about this novel was the way it made a presence out of absence. It gave nothingness teeth and weaponized shadows. I thought I was escaping the current political climate, but I wasn’t. Part of what makes The Mothers a stunning novel is its exploration of kinship and primary bonds. Our relationship to country is as fraught as our relationship to kin." –Carrie Brownstein, author of Hunger Makes Me a Modern Girl "Brit Bennett's masterful debut is brimming with unforgettable scenes and the sort of keenly-observed, precise language that makes you look at your own relationships anew. Told with the wisdom of a seasoned, compassionate storyteller, The Mothers is a novel about community, friendship, grief and growth. The two women at the center of this novel are characters you will find yourself thinking about long after you've turned the last page-- they pull you in close and never let you go. Bennett is a brilliant and much-needed new voice in literature." –Angela Flournoy, author of National Book Award-finalist The Turner House"Brit Bennett’s The Mothers is a brilliant exploration of friendship, desire, inheritance, the love we seek, and the love we settle for. It is the kind of book that from its first page seduces you into knowing that the heartbreak coming will be worth it." –Danielle Evans, author of Before You Suffocate Your Own Fool Self"Brit Bennett’s The Mothers is an engaging and assured debut novel of depth, and introspective power. It succeeds as a brilliant study of a modern black woman, and as a lyrical and majestic portrait of her place in society." –Chigozie Obioma, author of The Fishermen"Wonderful – warm and tender and necessary." –Yaa Gyasi, author of Homegoing "Conveys the complexities and challenges of young love with refreshing honesty and beautiful sentences. I cared about Brit Bennett's characters, and the choices they made, and couldn’t stop reading this remarkable debut." –Vendela Vida, author of The Diver’s Clothes Lie Empty "How do I start to describe The Mothers? Visceral? Riveting? Heart-wrenching? In the end this novel is all three and then some… Each line that Bennett produces cracks open with more intensity in order to ask over and over again: What if? The past and the present converge with each blossoming subplot until you begin to wonder what "mistakes" you've made in the past that changed your future, and whether or not you will have to grapple with them. The Mothers is a rollercoaster ride that picks up very quickly even while maintaining its complexity as it moves through the interwoven journeys of Brit Bennett's unforgettable characters." –Morgan Jerkins, Book of the Month

I really liked this book the first few chapters. 'The Mothers' as a collective voice was a great way to tell the story. But as the story wore on, it lost consistency, meaning and focus. So much was just left in the air, for example, I needed some sort of hint as to why the mother killed herself and this was a driving force to the story line. Also, characters were introduced, not fleshed out then disappeared serving no purpose to the story whatsoever (Shadi, the white boyfriend, the Marines, the gay sister, even the pastor, etc). Years were skipped over with absolutely nothing discussed and also important conversations were just dropped ('he stormed away, etc. i woke up the next morning... or something like, when I went back in the room... what happened????) Is this a book about abortion (I sorta thought so since it was based around the church and the guy ended up going to abortion counseling for fathers years later (really???), friendship, secrets, what exactly? Finally, the main character was unlikable. A little more time to character and plot development would have made this a 4 star book.

So many things to love in this book about love, loss, family, friendship and life. I finished last night yet cannot stop thinking about this story and it's characters. I'm still wondering about them and what will happen to them all as they move forward with their lives where the book leaves off.SYNOPSISThis story is m mostly told from the point of view Nadia, a highly intelligent, determined yet conflicted, complicated young lady and also told from the point of view of a group of "Church Mothers" from a very tight knit church called Upper Room. There are chapters featuring other points if view but it's mostly Nadia and the Mothers. When Nadia Turner is 17 years old she loses her mother. She and her mother were very close so she is completely devastated. Her father, Robert, is so caught up in his own grief that he seems to forget that he's solely response for a 17 year old girl who may be handling her loss in self-destructive ways.To deal his wife's untimely death, Robert turns to the church where the Turner family has always worshipped and his late wife was a very active member. Robert finds a sense of purpose spending his time helping wherever he is needed.Upper Room is more than just a place to spend an hour on Sunday mornings, to its members, it their community. Many members are there daily, considering the church to be their family. The pastor and his family are all but treated like royalty. In fact, the pastor's wife is referred to as 'the first lady.'The "Church Mothers" are the older ladies who have been involved with the church for as long as anyone can remember. They basically devote their lives to taking care of church business; running bake sale etc, praying daily for the members in need and gossiping about members - of course they don't consider it gossip, they think of it as sharing concerns and looking for opportunities to pray for others. Nonetheless, it's gossip. The book opens following Nadia though the rough months right after her mother dies when she forms bonds that will stay with her for the rest of her life and makes a mistake that will also follow her through her life.A lot of very 'real life' drama ensures making it hard to put the book down and hard not to take sides and pick favorites.WHAT I LOVED:I really loved the characters. They were very human and flawed. None were bad but they all made their share of mistakes. The "Church Mothers" were so real to me and probably anyone who grew up entrenched in a church community. They are basically well meaning ladies who set the standards for what is considered acceptable church behavior, church attire and church etiquette. Every Sunday morning across the US, mothers are straightening hair bows, combining down cow licks and reminding children to mind their P;s and Q's, all n an effort to get a nod of approval from these ladies. The story line was relevant, interesting and sucked me right in. It was hard to put it down.I both loved and hated that the ending didn't tie things up in an easy to swallow little package.WHAT I DIDN'T LOVEThere wasn't a lot to not love. I really don't enjoy books where the story line seems out line with reality and where characters do things that seem unbelievable. This book felt very authentic. I guess if I had to complain, it was a little short.

The Mothers: Brit Bennett brings the perfect tone to a near perfect story. The Mothers, is not a novel that I would have picked up to read, out of a list of assorted titles, for leisurely reading. I bought the novel because I had long ago decided to forego reading all of the eight books on the course’s “book list” that a talented local minister will talk about in a course for our “Bigelow Senior Center” this Fall. I have always wanted, not only to take the course in which the Reverend Rowe discusses his readings of the previous year, which, in total, amount to eight titles, but I have always regretted not having made the attempt. Having, once again, decided to take the course, I have chosen to read all eight books listed in the course description, although, it is not necessary to do so. I found The Mothers to be one of my better, summer reads, not only because it reads so true but also because Bennett’s cohesive, sensitive writing held up throughout, so well. It’s true. I would not have read The Mothers had it not been on the Reverend’s list. But I’m very glad I did because Bennett’s telling of the story is so vividly resonant.

OK book. This could be about any young girls from any race or religion. There were very few chapters written from the point of view of "the mothers." Almost all were from Nadia's view. I didn't come to the same views that reviewers did. I would say that the abortion affected many lives for many years and was the central theme. The book did keep my attention as I wanted to know what would happen to the various characters, but the ending seemed weak and I felt like it needed more detail. My book club read this so I'll be interested in our discussion.

In a small town in California, where the church is a major force, 2 girls, Nadia and Aubrey become best friends. Nadia has lost her mother due to suicide and her father is immersed in his own grief. Aubrey has moved away from her mother and is living with her sister and her partner.Nadia gets involved with the pastor's son Luke and makes a life changing decision which has long term effects. Nadia goes off to college and law school and makes a rare trip home for Aubrey and Luke's wedding and then again when her father is injured in a barbell accident. Many poor decisions are made in this book which have far reaching consequences. The characters and scenarios are very realistic and while this is not an upbeat book, the author totally draws you into the story.

Review

This book does not mirror current fashions in American psychiatry and psychology but does something far more important: it forecasts a future trend... (Gordon W. Allport, Harvard University)Easily the best introduction available for Americans who have been baffled by the European phenomenologists and existentialists. A strong antidote against triviality and superficiality in psychology. (Abraham Maslow, Brandeis University)Existence is now, simply, the major work on existential analysis in the English language. (Journal Of Individual Psychology)This book opens up a new dimension for psychoanalysis and psychotherapy. It is the dimension of the ultimate question, the question of man's nature and his place within the whole or reality. (Paul Tillich, Harvard University)

Here is a book that puts all of the pieces of Existentialism, Existential Psychology and Existential Psychotherapy into place. It is a series of in-depth seminal articles will an introduction "to die for," all written by the giants of the era in which modern psychology was developed. In order to fit within the Amazon guidelines for length, this review focuses primarily on the introduction, which is itself a kind of broad summary of the contents of the book. However, readers are not to be discouraged from delving into the actual test cases upon which the theories and practices are built. In a real sense, they are the foundation of a new discipline. The reader should be warned that this is a densely packed and densely written book and an amateur such as myself, could not possibly do justice to reviewing this book, but here goes anyway. The problem facing psychotherapy during the formative years of psychology was this: Although the techniques of psychotherapy were affecting cures; the therapists did not quite understand why their techniques and theories worked? As a result, the gaps between their theories and the reality of man had begun to raise serious questions - the most important of them being: Were these theories seeing man in the totality of his world of existence? Or were the patient's "unconscious problems" just becoming the "conscious projection" of the analyst's theories and techniques? As a general strategy, the Existentialists believed that treating "mentally ill man" before first developing a science of man was to proceed bass-ackwards: They argued that this approach begged the question: Would it not make more sense to first understand the patient's life-history as a modification of the total structure of his "being-in-the-world," before applying theories to his illnesses?Although Kierkegaard and Nietzsche had struggled with this and similar questions a half-century before, it was Freud's disciples who first seemed to understand the full implications of this growing gap and began trying to cover the blind spots created by it. Arguably the search for ways to fill this gap was the underlying cause of the breakup of Freud's famous Vienna Circle. It was in part the pursuit of this inchoate goal that Carl Jung was the first to stray from the herd. He expanded the Freudian paradigm to include symbols and images. Jung was followed by Otto Rank, who introduced and discussed the notion of "present time" to deal with the patience's inner experiences. Wilhelm Reich, used character analysis as an answer to many of "Freud's "ego defense mechanisms" and instinct theories. Horney then expanded Freudian analysis into new cultural approaches --- as did Fromm and Sullivan who added the missing significance of the social and interpersonal and its impact on neurotic and psychotic disturbances. Adler, May and Rogers, sought to understand the role of self-esteem both as being at the center of the life of man, as well as an independent variable in the therapeutic setting. Thus, Freud's army of acolytes, as an unintended consequence of trying to fill in the blind spots between theory and clinical reality, became in effect the first group of Existentialist psychologists. In the broadest sense then, Existentialism developed as a primarily European movement that protested against seeing the patient in fragmented forms, especially forms tailored to the analyst's own preconceptions. Thus Existentialism became the movement designed to fill in the gap between science and humanism, between existing psychological theory and reality. It sought to do so by broadening the knowledge of man to include the historical perspective: accepting as a "given" that human beings reveal themselves, not just through their illnesses, but also through all forms of "normal" human behavior such as their art, literature, philosophy and cultural movements -- all of which reflect human anxiety and conflicts as well.Existentialism thus is not a philosophy or way of life, but an endeavor designed to get a better grasp on reality. Its paradigm of human behavior is not one based wholly on techniques, but also on a framework that sees man as always becoming, always emerging, and thus always potentially in crisis. The most debilitating form of "methodolatry" came into common use around the turn of the Century through the act of dividing man into "subject" and "object." This, in part was due to Hegel's reining "totalitarianism of reason," in which "abstract truth" was seen as being all there was to reality. However, Kierkegaard and Nietzsche struggling heroically against Hegel, believed that truth exists only as it is expressed through action by individuals: Man is not just a subject to be controlled and manipulated. The Existentialists thus sought to repeal Decartes edict of "cogito ergo sum." For, indeed, man's reality is more than just his thinking. Thought is only one aspect of the vitality of our existence: Man should not think as a thinker; but as a man; not as a collection of static substances, drives, dynamisms, or mechanisms, but rather, always as an emerging and a becoming being. The essence of existence, of reality, of truth, is not thought, but change: of forever becoming, forever emerging.Existentialism's job is to understand that "this becoming" is not just as an artifact of reality but is THE fundamental structure of human existence. Its concern thus is with ontology, the study of being rather than with the study of psychology per se.Every sentence of this book is profound and enlightening. 1000 stars.

While American psychoanalysis during the 40s and 50s was under the influence of Freud, Europeans were beginnig to branch out in new directions, especially influenced by the existentialism of Martin Heidegger, Edmund Husserl, Jean-Paul Sartre and Maurice Merleau-Ponty. "Existence," edited by Rollo May, was the first book to introduce Americans to the writings of those who worked under the mantle of existential psychology. Contained within are essays by Erwin Straus and Ludwig Binswanger, among others. The second half of the book contains three essays by Binswanger not previously available in America.Although the book is a good introduction to existential psychoanalysis, it contians a glaring omission by the absence of writings from Medard Boss, a Swiss Dasienanalysist who became the leading light of this type of therapy in Europe. Despite this omission, however, the book remains an eye-opener for anyone unfamiliar with existential psychoanalysis and is recommended for psychology student and philosophy student alike.

Absolute must-read for anyone working in the various fields of mental health. What has been lost in the industrialization of healing professions, and particularly through the medicalization of the soul, can be recaptured in this book.

Satisfied.

An excellent book! And the ship speed is rather quick.

Existence was the earliest introduction to the US of existencialism and existential psychology and we owe much of the development and growth of humanistic and existential psychology to Rollo May. The book is well written, and is of great historical and philosoical importance. This book is often mentioned as influential upon the work of Carl Rogers, Irving Yalom and others.

This book changed my life, back in my college days. The introductory essay by Rollo May is a revelation, accessible and profound at the same time. The rest of the book is unimportant. Of all the books I read in college and since, this one - that essay - has stayed with me. I highly recommend it.

For those primarily interested in Rollo May's Introduction to this book, I believe it can also be found in his book "The Discovery of Being" Chapter 3 "Origins and Significance of Existential Psychology."The Discovery of Being: Writings in Existential Psychology

This should be on every YA reading list. The way in which Yolen communicates the atrocities of WWII, the way she exquisitely works in how resistance was living to tell the tale is just marvellous. It evokes a deep feeling of empathy in the reader that is so crucial to develop in young adults, while being a short and easily digested story. There are not enough stars for this book.

This historical fiction tells the story of a young disinterested Jewish girl, Hannah, who is tired of hearing her Grandfather's personal stories of the Holocaust. During the celebration of the Seder, without any warning she finds herself living in the past with family in Poland. The present and the past blur - she has knowledge that no one is willing to believe. As a result she and others are put in a concentration camp where Hannah learns first hand of what her Grandfather had been speaking for so long. The young girl returns to the present Seder dinner just as abruptly as she had left, but now with a greater appreciation of her Jewish heritage and religion, and with an understanding of the significance of the numbers tattooed on the arms of her older relatives. This is well written, with an unusual telling of the Holocaust. It is not so graphic as other books covering this subject, so is appropriate for children as young as 11 or 12; but because of the subject matter, it is important to engage them in conversation and discuss the events of the Holocaust. This is a book to be shared with our younger generation - it is important not only for the Jewish people to remember this time in their history, but also for the rest of us to remember and learn.

This is a very good book. The author takes us on a journey of remembrance. Has Hannah opens the door to let Elijah in during her families Cedar celebration, she is transported on the astounding yet horrifying journey of her ancesters as they become prisoners in a German camp during WWII. She will never forget the price her ancestors paid for their Jewish heritage at that time in history. I recommend this book to eveyone.

I have read at least 7 Holocaust survivor stories to my 10 and 12-year-old children over the course of the last 2 years. I was hesitant to read this book because it is fiction, but decided to go ahead and give it a try since it had such positive reviews. This book starts off slowly and I had to stop and explain the content every 2-3 pages. The author seems to assume that you have attended a Seder (I actually have- 3 times now) and have a working knowledge of the Yiddish language (I do not). Many times the Yiddish word is used to describe something or someone, with no explanation or solid context cues to figure the word out (thank you Google). The book is very slow for the first 50-60 pages, but does get interesting and exciting when the Nazi army bursts onto the scene. The experiences that the main character experiences at the concentration camp are similar to actual occurrences I've already read in nonfiction books. At the conclusion of the book I was left to ponder, why did I read an historical fiction account of the Holocaust when there are so many biographical accounts that are much more powerfully told?

The book is just incredible. It give a new perspective that we might not have considered. Though this book is amazing it is this way - now ill tell without sharing too much - because in the book it shows a hint of reality without being real and though there furiously sad parts it adds to the feel of what exactly the Jews had gone through when dealing with this insanity. I definitely recommend this to all and I believe that children, Christian - much like myself - would enjoy this book and even parents and teachers. So I definitely think it deserves a first class 5 star rating.

My daughter is reading this book in school and because she is dyslexic, I have started getting my own copy of her required reading so that I can help her if she needs it. This book was so good. It did a great job of telling a story of what it was probably like in a concentration camp. Being that it is written from a 12-year-old's perspective, the situations were very descriptive. It was hard to read the names and remember who belonged to what family, but other than that, it is a very educational and captivating read.

I read this book because it was a school assignment for my sixth grade grandson, and he wanted me to read so we could talk about it. Having said that, I enjoyed the way the author presented the story of Hannah/Chaya. Compelling, easy to read with an incredibly powerful impact. I was overcome with sadness. I am sure it must have been hard for him to process fully as how could anyone not living through that time possibly conceive of what happened to those people affected by Nazi Germany. Very well done under those sad circumstances.

I read this book after watching the movie, to see what the contrast would be.l actually think the movie follows the book pretty closely.l would recommend this book to anyone who wants to read about the Holocaust from the experience of what the camps were like from survivors experiences.

Things I like:- Gives most of the common specifications.- Has a picture of the correct car on the front.Things I don't like:- Fails to list basic specifications, including: tire pressure and disc brake thickness.- Is filled with generic steps not specific to this vehicle.- Gives no overhaul procedures whatsoever for either the manual or automatic transmissions, but instead lectures generically about the difficulties. I didn't buy this to be told it's difficult, and anyone undertaking the task knows this already. If you've not worked on a car before, I'm sure it's useful. If you have, and you're interested in the specifics of your vehicle, you'll be disappointed. Haynes manuals of yesteryear didn't have such gross negligence, and paid impressive attention to detail, which is the point of buying the maintenance manual. With the wealth of information freely available online, it's likely I'll not purchase from Haynes ever again.

You know your vehicle is getting old when you can buy the Haynes repair manual for it and you no longer consider it necessary to have everything done by "the shop" because you now have the pink slip. For example, our Toyota Matrix has 170,0000 miles on its 2006 Corolla engine and I'm determined to see how far it'll go before conking out. Once knew someone whose 1978 Corolla engine racked up 650,000 miles before being towed away by San Francisco police for too many unpaid parking tickets -- and it was still running even though we never saw it again. So I'm counting on Haynes to help me go the distance and maybe even pass up the old record held by the old Swami Car (nickname for that '78 Corolla). You can't beat their clear instructions and helpful photos, for any make/model.

DO NOT buy if you have a matrix XRS or Vibe GT. This doesn't cover the 2zz-ge motor or 6 speed transmission. Should be more clearly stated on this item page.

I have owned Haynes manuals for every vehicle I ever owned. I bought this one the day I purchased my 2009 Pontiac Vibe. I do some repair work myself, but even if you're not a home mechanic, the book has lots of useful information that will save you the cost of the book as soon as you need to change a bulb or fuse.

You should buy one of these for every automobile you own. Reading a manual before you take your car to get it worked on will help you understand what is going on before the mechanic starts talking.

My used 2005 Vibe had only 55,000 miles, so I was not needing to do any in depth maintenance. My initial quest was to find out more about the DRL. Daytime Running Lights which I soon found out there is a sizeable number of people that find the automatic light system very inconvenient/ bothersome. There is NO manual headlight switch ! The only way to turn off the headlights is to be in PARK with the parking brake set. This at least was in the book. I had to go to[...] to find a solution to disable the automatic light system. My wife's Hyundai is capable of turning off the lights from the column light switch. Beware of GM they are the originators of controversial DRL.

This is your typical Haynes Repair Manual. Informative and helpful to a point. If your vehicle is a 2009 or 2010 1.8 liter, it's pretty much useless.

This is an adequate manual for typical home mechanics and routine procedures. I was replacing front wheel bearings and half shafts on my daughter's '04 Vibe, but was disappointed that the book had almost nothing on the hub assembly and disassembly requirements. Im still happy to leave the manual with the car as a reference for future maintenance.

About the Author

When used together Lexile measure help a reader find books at an appropriate level of challenge, and determine how well that reader will likely comprehend a text. When a Lexile text measure matches a Lexile reader measure, this is called a "targeted" reading experience. So far so good. I like that this translation seems less old fashioned than some others. Pevear and Volokhonsky have a mixed reputation--such is the difficulty with putting someone else's words into your own. If everyone wants to know exactly what Tolstoy or Dumas is really like, the best course would be to read them in the original language! However, I do still believe translation matters; what I have found is that in the case of these translators they tend to retain more of the author's intentions. I have been told by Russian readers that Dostoevsky could sometimes read as difficult and confusing in Russian but also more exciting; most popular English translations from the early 20th century tend to even out the dynamics of the text, making it read closer to Jane Austen's voice than you might be comfortable with. Imagine Pulp Fiction, or The Matrix, or Hitchcock (something adventurous ) remade using the most staid and edible film conventions...so much of what makes those stories special would be lost.As far as I understand, this edition retains much of the Dumasness in English and in the process is a great read! A classic like this could be butchered to death by tasteless fools and still hold onto some worth so, since the translation is clean and interesting, the material is elevated. Whatever your preference, this version certainly warrants a place in the market and quite possibly your bookshelf.

I got this for my sister after she had her second child. I kind of felt that she needed a copy with an old school binding for her son to discover on her bookshelf, or in storage, or somewhere around the house like I did as a kid.The copy lived up to the look I wanted. It had the design that would be intimidating when he was learning to read, the design that made it clearly an "adult" book...and then the title: "The Three Musketeers" which was enough, at least for me, to give it a peak inside and discover the adventure.I hope things go the same way here. Its really a must read for childhood and it has that mysterious feel that a kid would eventually be attracted to.

I had read the entire d'Artagnan saga this summer and loved it. But I read where this translation of the first book was really a good one. So I read The Three Musketeers again and was delighted with it. I was able to better appreciate the differences in the four friends and realized that I loved d'Artagnan and really liked the others because d'Artagnan loved them. I am now reading another translation of Twenty Years After. I am enjoying the historical events and the real people who participated in them, and that d'Artagnan participated in then. Dumas has a fine sense of humour and writes wonderful dialogue.

Often older translations of works like the The Three Musketeers can seem stilted to modern readers. Translator Lawrence Ellsworth believes that some of these versions "simply don't properly convey the energy and tone of Dumas's original work" (p. xix). This is not a criticism that could be applied to his translation. This book is lively, carrying the story dynamically from page to page. He manages to do this without some of the glaring anachronisms that can sometimes plague a modern translation. He also provides useful notes that help to explain some of the historic events and references.I'm not qualified to say if this is an accurate translation but is certainly an accessible, highly readable and fun one. Highly recommended.

I have seen several movie versions of this tale, but none do it true justice. It is not difficult to like the four main characters, each is unique, memorable and loyal. I appreciated that they were based upon real men, actual musketeers, who lived, loved and fought during that time in French history. Some of the events in the story are also a matter of historial fact. Dumas has woven an exciting adventure around these men and events, creating a complicated web of intrigue and political machinations.I am very surprised and also delighted to say that I thoroughly enjoyed this book and I am vastly encouraged to read other novels by this author.FIVE very deserved stars!

There's no point in "reviewing" Dumas' The Three Musketeers - it's an obvious classic, and this is a standard translation of the work. So I'll comment on the presentation. This is the only 99 cent version of this book that I've seen for Kindle that had actual *editing* done to it! It is well laid out, and includes numerous appropriate illustrations. The only problem is that some of the formatting doesn't quite look right. The all-caps text appears tiny and some of the illustration titles use a peculiar mix of fonts that occasionally appear larger or smaller than normal text. It's a minor problem, but it can be distracting.I'm not positive, but I suspect the source text for this is the free Project Gutenberg version. However, unlike most of the cheap Kindle editions that merely copy and paste the text from Project Gutenberg, the editor who created this ebook took the time to convert ALL CAPS to italics, spent some time formatting it, and added illustrations. It also has the coolest looking cover of any Kindle edition of The Three Musketeers. The Penguin Classics edition has better editing and presentation, but it's $13. For 99 cents, this Kindle edition is well worth it. Certainly more worth it than every other 99 cent version I've sampled, and it's definitely better than the free Amazon Services edition.Recommended!
